De Blasio Threatens to Sue if Trump Sends Immigrants to Sanctuary City NYC

KRISTINA WONG 16 Apr 2019

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio threatened to sue the Trump administration if it sends illegal immigrants to New York City, a “sanctuary city.”

“It’s illegal. It is just plain illegal. We will meet him in court. We will beat him in court,” de Blasio said, according to the New York Post.

President Trump on Monday tweeted, “Those Illegal Immigrants who can no longer be legally held (Congress must fix the laws and loopholes) will be, subject to Homeland Security, given to Sanctuary Cities and States”:

So do as Trump suggests,  Congress - fix the laws so releasing illegals into the interior won't be necessary.   The problem has long been Congressional inaction more than anything else.   If this is the threat that gets the squabblin' bozos to act, so be it.

@Jazzhead I don't know how you get so many things wrong so regularly.  No, it is not the fault of Congress.  The laws are already there, and there are two problems with them: 1) courts block enforcement and 2) bad execution of current laws.  Tell the courts they are limited to their constitutional roles and re-work policy to actually be effective.

Even granting your premise that the "laws are there" (and I disagree, just without the snark),  Congress is needed to appropriate funds.    To avoid releasing migrants into the interior,  funding is needed for more detention facilities and more judges to address the claims of asylum seekers.

The problem with the laws is that they are designed to address single men crossing the border to seek work, not whole families fleeing gang violence and anarchy.

"The "laws are there"" is snarky?

Regardless, there are a number of things that could be done to stop the cross-border traffic for the most part.  There have been a number of posts here at TBR listing some policy changes that would have a big influence on the illegal traffic.  And, none of them would require anything from Congress.  The "Congress needs to act" meme is a big ol' stinky red herring.
