Want to know what goes on behind the fence line of major oil refineries and chemical plants?

A new virtual reality tour of two major facilities in Texas, Marathon Petroleum's Galveston Bay refinery or Ineos' La Porte chemical plant, allows users to get a glimpse of what operations are like there even if they're miles away. The tour – produced by the industry group American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers– is part of an ongoing effort from AFPM to combat what industry professionals see as misconceptions about the refining industry, educate the public and boost the industry's recruiting efforts.

Users can insert their smartphones into Google Cardboard – cardboard boxes that fit over a phone and allow users to experience VR without expensive googles - or viewers can use Google's Oculus goggles to take the tour of Marathon Petroleum's Galveston Bay refinery or Ineos in La Porte. (More instructions at the bottom of this article.)

The effort comes as more oil and gas companies embrace virtual reality as a training, education and outreach tool....

I toured the control room of the Monsanto(now INEOS) Chocolate Bayou plant in 82. The next year I started work at Johnson Space Center. The plant's control room put NASA's to shame.
