Pete Buttigieg's father was a Marxist professor who lauded the Communist Manifesto
by Emily Larsen
 & Joseph Simonson
 | April 02, 2019 12:02 AM

The father of Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg was a Marxist professor who spoke fondly of the Communist Manifesto and dedicated a significant portion of his academic career to the work of Italian Communist Party founder Antonio Gramsci, an associate of Vladimir Lenin.

Joseph Buttigieg, who died in January at the age of 71, immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s from Malta and in 1980 joined the University of Notre Dame faculty, where he taught modern European literature and literary theory. He supported an updated version of Marxism that jettisoned some of Marx and Engel's more doctrinaire theories, though he was undoubtedly Marxist.

He was an adviser to Rethinking Marxism, an academic journal that published articles “that seek to discuss, elaborate, and/or extend Marxian theory,” and a member of the editorial collective of Boundary 2, a journal of postmodern theory, literature, and culture. He spoke at many Rethinking Marxism conferences and other gatherings of prominent Marxists.   ... Full story

Exactly. The same political point of view - including disdain for the Constitution - as well as being a bright, articulate member of a persecuted minority  (in Pete's case, homosexuals).

Only in Pete's case? :pondering:

Jazz, you and I are evaluating possible election outcomes, has nothing to do with your candidate likes or my candidate likes.  Some people can't stand back and evaluate; they are stuck in praise of their candidate no matter what is happening around that candidate.  It is important to know as much as possible about those running for your office.  Will watch Pete B. rise or fall.

@Victoria33 @Jazzhead

So, I guess that would make the begged question, "Who is better for the USA:  A soft spoken Democrat Socialist or a rough talking Republican?"   :pondering:

Just like BHO in every respect, then.

Indeed.

And there are many who will see him only as he presents himself to be, and be proud of voting for the first homosexual candidate for President, just like they did with Obama and his being black.

They won't know or care if he's a Marxist, pro-abortion or anything else. (Or if his ancestors were slave traders).

One thing we know we can count on with the left (and unfortunately too many on the right) is that they are abjectly ignorant, and that the facts don't matter.

@Cyber Liberty

That's not the discussion they were having.  @Victoria33  clearly said that no one here would vote for him.

The question is whether or not he can win the Democrat nomination.

And I think, because he presents himself as more moderate than the gaggle of socialists he'll be running against, and because he IS intelligent, he has a good chance of getting the nomination.

(Depending, as I said earlier, on whether or not the Dem primary voters are as daft as the majority of their candidates).

We'll have to agree to disagree about how I read a couple of posts, as usual agreeably.

I think he has a decent chance too.  As long as he can keep his radicalism under wraps.   That he is soft spoken in the age of Trump is a plus for many.  Probably won't earn him one TBR vote.  If he won he would be every bit as bad as Obama, right down to the weaponization of the instruments of the Executive office, to the delighted squee of the damned press.  We'll be finished as a country.

It really depends on how many people really hate Donald Trump.

Can you guess that my answer is neither?    The emergence of someone with Obama-like appeal (remember,  Obama ran his first campaign on a feigned platform of inclusion and reconciliation)  ought to be a wake-up call to Republicans.   We CAN do better than Trump - indeed we MUST do better if we hope to continue his policy directions.

Precisely.    Folks don't want to vote for the lesser of two evils.   Folks want to see our country as coming together, not pulling apart.   Folks want to feel like they are supporting a candidate who espouses empathy and tolerance,  not tribal emnity.    In short, folks want to support a candidate that they can be proud of.

That's what I want.  And that's why I want a Republican alternative to Donald Trump.

If Donald Trump decides to run for reelection you aren't getting one.  Fact.

So what now?  Third Party?  Rat?  I don't envy your alternatives. Life's lonely on that soapbox you have there.

I guess I'm the simple one, then. I want a president who comes the closest to pursuing policies I support.

As goofy as Trump can be, he comes closest to fitting that description, by miles.

Then I, apparently share the same soap box.

Rat is NEVER an alternative.  Third Party stinks, but if it's all we've got, it's all we've got.

The Republicans need to come up with a viable alternative to Trump.  But they won't.  Because they're Republicans.  And their values are expendable.

I learned from experience as a youngster too young to vote that politics is almost always a negative proposition.  I typically vote against people, not for them and that's a pity because I never get what I want.

Sadly, I put little faith in the GOP. They have collectively managed to drop the ball instead of moving it downfield in the right direction more times than I can count. They have squandered opportunity after opportunity, despite being elected expressly over Conservative issues (the TEA party class, for instance), and like idiots try to negotiate starting with what they want, not well past that and end up giving ground every time.

I would love to see a return to our Constitution in Government, but neither major Party is interested in that.

You gotta live in the world as it is, not as you'd wish it to be.   What conservatives have is the instrument of the GOP,  a coalition of conservatives and others,  a necessary requirement to form majorities and win elections.   We do not live in a world where TEA party-style Constitutionalism commands majority support;  not even close.

The sad reality of America today.

There is no longer a (major) party that even pretends to represent us.

True. I ran for state legislature in 2012 and narrowly lost. Just the other night, Mr. M commented that if I ran in the next election (2020), who knows what the Democrats and the media would accuse me of doing, no matter how untrue. How does one overcome a mountain of lies?
