Tiger Woods wins Masters for first time since 2005

It was a Sunday unlike any other at this tradition unlike any other.

But as on four previous Sunday afternoons at Augusta National Golf Club, Tiger Woods stood alone at the top of the Masters leaderboard.

Woods, 43, shot a 2-under par 70 to win his first green jacket since 2005 and his first major since the 2008 U.S. Open. His 13-under 275 was enough to defeat Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffle, and Brooks Koepeka by one stroke, but that does not begin to tell the story of a dramatic Sunday that ended approximately four-and-a-half hours early after tee times were moved ahead due to the threat of severe weather.

If you had told me that after his previous majors win in 2008 at the U.S. Open that he wouldn't win another major for eleven years, I would have bet you a lot of money than he would. 
I thought he'd have won at least ten more by now.

Only some. Death of his beloved father, serious injuries and multiple surgeries, pain med addiction, plus long and difficult return to top form, were not self-inflicted in the sense you mean.

I see him as an imperfect human soul (as God made us) that may serve as a positive role model for others, to get back up, and keep  on trying.

Every time know-better sports fans turn on a TV they’re at immediate risk of being insulted as too stupid to know better.

Tiger Woods is the best golfer most of us have ever witnessed. Agreed? Agreed. To that end, we’ve been blessed. But that should be the end.  So why are our good senses always forced to play defense against repetitive claims and portrayals we know not to be true?  ...

For crying out loud, he’s a human, loaded with corresponding flaws. He’s not a deity.

Yet, this Masters was another four-day TV worship service officiated by the Rev. Jim Nantz, the Masters’ pastoral pastor from a pristine pasture over which CBS would pipe in recorded chirps from birds never before seen or heard south of Duluth.

“I get the sense,” writes reader Frank Tredici, “that Nantz doesn’t think I love my kids as much as Tiger loves his.” ...

Comeback? Comeback from what? OK, back surgery.  But also a riotous, cops-called, caught-sexting marriage? Hookups with hookers? A DUI opioid bust followed by drug rehab? An Olympics-banned “special” doctor regularly flown in from Canada to treat him until he was arrested and convicted for possession of illegal, mislabeled drugs?

Want a heroic comeback? In 1949, Ben Hogan likely saved his wife’s life when he dived across her body from the driver’s seat a moment before a bus, blindly passing a truck, slammed head-on into their car. ...

Why did CBS focus on Woods so much? Occam's Razor.  Ratings. Pure and simple. IIRC this Masters ratings were the highest in about three decades.
 Expect a lot more focus on Woods from the sports networks. Golf, as a rule, does not exactly draw the ratings of big name team sports. Woods is about the only big name golfer guaranteed to draw in the viewers.
