Kamala Harris Proudly Proclaims ‘I Am a Gun-Owner’ Before Launching Typical Leftist Attack on Guns
By C. Douglas Golden

Sen. Kamala Harris is a gun owner. She has that right under the Second Amendment. She also thinks that the Second Amendment is a pretty fungible thing.

Harris has been one of the loudest champions of banning so-called “assault weapons” and instituting universal background checks. However, she too is a gun owner — which is why she thinks that firearms ought to be regulated. Or something.

“I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do — for personal safety,” the California senator and 2020 Democrat presidential candidate said, according to CNN. “I was a career prosecutor.”

You give her too much credit in the brain department. She probably has a water pistol.

Bans on "assault rifles" are unnecassary,  ineffective as policy and likely unconstitutional.   What is needed is licensure, registration and a requirement to maintain insurance.   With those in place,  folks should be able to enjoy the gun hobby and the shooting sports to the extent they please.

License, Insurance and registration is a fabulous way to tabulate gun owners for easier confiscation or, short that, make gun ownership too expensive for everybody but the wealthy.  This has been explained to you too many times.

Yes, and it's bullshit.   Even folks of modest means are able to drive and own cars,  with their fellow citizens protected in the event injuries are caused by the inevitable, occasional accident.

Enjoy your hobby.  Enjoy the shooting sports.  Just spare me the paranoia.

That's OK. I'm not in the mood to have this talk for the 20th time anyway.

Typical liberal interpretation of the plain language of the second amendment and why it was placed there.

You believe that people in the 18th century had guns just for 'gun hobby and the shooting sports to the extent they please.'

Easy torpedo of your attempt to mischaracterize one of the Founders' greatest freedoms.

Yeah and just like in your BS example where the people who don't insure and register their cars and don't get a license still drive pushing up the expense on the rest of us who are barely eke out out a living, so too are there and always will be those that illegally own guns. This is a just more of infringing on our rights. You laughingly use an example of privilege to excuse an infringement of our Constitutional right. I'm sure you are just dandy with the socialists attempts to make ammunition unobtanium by law abiding citizens too. I really don't like your version of America where rights are just guidelines and the Constitution is a living document and people like you are the reason people like me have paranoia. Is it paranoia if there are large number of socialists and their willing partners working to bring about the thing you're paranoid of?

You aren't paranoid if some people really are out to get you.

I think it all depends on how it was stored, I know I fired WWII age ammo in the 80's and it worked just fine.

This isn't the 18th century, bub.   There is no King George.   This isn't the frontier, where folks hunt for their food.   This isn't the age of muskets and simple repeating arms.

I understand that the Constitution protects our right to defend our persons and our homes against bad guys.   I understand that lots of folks like to collect guns and enjoy the shooting sports.  I don't support radical ideas like gun bans and confiscation  I propose only the simple and effective regime of licensure, registration and insurance.   Same as with cars - a regime we all have come to accept as necessary to address the accidental damage that motor vehicles sometimes cause.

Further proof you do not listen, just run circular arguments.  I wish I had a nickel for how many times you floated the stupid register and license angle, and how many times you've been shot down.

Somehow your mind has this "cars = guns" dogma that persists in the face of reason.  You are just like the politician in the headline of this thread.

I'm beginning to suspect you have no respect at all for the members of TBR.  None.  People who respect people listen to them before formulating an argument, you do not.

stupid  . . .

I give as much respect as I get, CL.

Look,  I don't espouse a radical position.   I support the individual RKBA arms as articulated by Justice Scalia in Heller.   But I reject the ridiculous notion that the purpose of the RKBA is so we can foment revolution and shoot at public servants.    There is no more King George.    The government of our representative Republic can be turned away at the ballot box,  not with your collection of guns.

But go ahead and collect the guns you want.   I understand the collecting impulse.   For me it's jazz records.   If for you happiness is a warm gun,  then solid.

Licensure,  registration and insurance  is a perfectly reasonable position.    The parallel with cars isn't exact, but it's close enough to put the lie to accusations that such measures keep ordinary folks from owning guns,  buying and selling guns,  or suffering the confiscation of their guns.

I oppose the Dems' idiocy about self-serving, ineffective crapola like gun bans and onerous requirements that effectively deny the individual right guaranteed by Heller.   You and I are on the same page in opposing the anti-gun schemes of the Dems.   But state laws that require drivers to be licensed,  and cars to be registered to their owners and properly insured when used for their intended purpose, aren't "anti-car" - they are merely the means by which the community addresses the trade-off between the inherent benefits and dangers of cars.   Similar measures make perfect sense in the context of firearms,  and - if reasonable - are entirely compatible with the individual RKBA.

Exactly.

Where we differ is you do not believe the 'bad guys' could ever be the government, whereas I believe the Founders knew better.

As a hint, it was the ONLY reason they drafted the document.

Yes, that is the difference in our views.   The 2A speaks of its right in terms of the militia.  But that's an obsolete concept.    Heller, on the other hand,  addresses the individual RKBA which is relevant to each and every American.    I support the right described in Heller,  which I believe the Constitution protects without regard to the 2A.

The problem, of course, which I have pointed out before,  is that the individual RKBA for personal self-defense is a fragile one,  dependent (like the abortion right) on a transient Court majority,  and which is under attack (also like the abortion right) by the right's opponents.   I think it is crucial to cement the Heller opinion by codifying it.
