A state Assembly committee voted to block legislation that would provide free NY college tuition to the families of military service members killed in the line of duty.

New York Assembly Democrats on Wednesday defended their vote against a bill that would have provided free college tuition to families of any military member from the state killed in the line of duty.

Republicans had called the 15-11 vote to hold up the bill in the Higher Education Committee “disgraceful” and heartless.
