Is identity politics a sufficient explanation for whatever happened since then on a global scale?So we have a lot of different problems worldwide now, and I think they fall into several different categories. One is simply a shift in geopolitics. After 1991 there weren’t any large powerful authoritarian countries that were threatening democracy and now you’ve got China and Russia, both of which have grown, they have consolidated, they are very self-confident and they are pushing the boundaries of the American-European order that had been established.
