Study: Corn production causes 4,300 deaths each year

"The deaths caused per bushel in western corn belt states such as Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska tend to be lower than in eastern corn belt states such as Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio," said lead researcher Jason Hill.

April 1 (UPI) -- The way farmers produce corn could be killing thousands of Americans, new findings show.

About 4,300 premature deaths occur each year in the United States due to environmental damage brought on by corn production, according to a study published Monday in Nature Sustainability. That environmental damage accounts for nearly $40 billion in costs.

"The deaths caused per bushel in western corn belt states such as Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska tend to be lower than in eastern corn belt states such as Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio," Jason Hill, a researcher at University of Minnesota and study lead author, said in a news release.

Growing Corn Is A Major Contributor To Air Pollution, Study Finds

You've probably heard statistics about how our diet affects the health of the planet. Like how a beef hamburger takes considerably more water and land to produce than a veggie burger or that around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from food production. In fact, there are websites that can calculate the carbon footprint of specific foods.

But you may not have considered how the food we eat contributes to the quality of the air we breathe.

Air pollution is the largest environmental health risk factor in the United States, and agriculture contributes in a number of ways. Fertilizer application, gas use, pesticide production and dust kicked up from tilling all affect air quality. But the sort of accounting done for the carbon footprint of foods hasn't been done for their air pollution footprint.

Not sure of the correct area for these articles, it could go in health too. I heard some of this on the radio. Who knows? It sounds alarming.

So, it sounds like they are saying it is because of how the corn is farmed.

I call BS.

Just like the whole pound of beef takes ourtrageous amounts of water. What they don't tell you is that they count the rain that falls on the grass the cows eat, same rain that would fall regardless if the cows ate the grass or not.
The Republic is lost.
