Navy to honor Navajo Nation with new class of vessels

March 14 (UPI) -- A new class of Navy ships will be named to honor the Navajo Nation, the Secretary of the Navy announced.

The new class of vessels will be involved in towing, salvage and rescue operations and will replace the current T-ATF 166 and T-ARS 50 class ships in service with the U.S. Military Sealift Command, the U.S. Navy announced this week.

The first ship of the class will be named USNS Navajo and designated T-ATS 6. The $63.5 million contract to build the first ship by 2021 was awarded to Gulf Island Shipyards of Houston, and includes an option to build seven more. Each ship will be named to honor a Native American tribe or a prominent Native American.
