Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday derided the House Judiciary Committee's sweeping investigation into President Trump as "the biggest, most gruesome display of modern day McCarthyism."

"Is what you’re seeing from the new far-left Democratic Party good for you, good for your family?" Hannity asked in the opening monologue of his Fox News program. "Well, I think the answer will be obvious because, just like I have told you in the past, once Democrats’ collusion hysteria is exposed as a fraud, they wouldn’t apologize, they wouldn’t admit they’re wrong."

"They were just going to pivot into investigating anything they make up and everything involving the president. We the people will now be subject to the biggest, most gruesome display of modern-day McCarthyism," Hannity continued, referencing a campaign former Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.) launched in the 1950s against alleged communists in government and society.

We had a discussion on "McCarthyism" as a term some months ago. Maybe this should go in politics.

And by definition, I suppose this does fit the conventional definition of "McCarthyism".

McCarthyism, but with a purpose -  to create the conditions whereby Trump will be forced to run for re-election to protect his family.   The Dems' goal is to install socialism, and they know the way to do that is to make 2020 a referendum on Trump.

I disagree with Hannity's use of McCarthyism to describe this witch hunt against all things Trump.  McCarthyism was a term the radical left used to describe a legitimate expose of their communist activities and leanings.  It was in no way based on false or nonfactual data and there was nothing fraudulent about those investigations.  The investigations  uncovered plenty of real-life communists working and living in America, especially in Hollyweird.

So for Hannity to use that term here denigrates a legitimate investigation in the past by comparing it to an illegitimate investigation in the present.  Hannity is not real/awfully bright.

I think people have used it really don't think about it. I do agree with what you say. It's sort of taken on its own meaning, I do agree, it disrespects Joe McCarthy in that way.
