Uhh.... is that supposed to be reassuring?

Why would an attempt to protect conservative students' First Amendment rights require reassurance?

Is it the right approach?  I dunno.  This will probably be decided by the 9th Circus.

A court, BTW, with conservative judges sitting on it, thanks to the President.

Slippery Slope @Right_in_Virginia with the 'kids' in charge now, I'd rather leave well enough alone.
The Constitution and the current SC's interpretation should cover us on this.

It does at state universities.  This is making First-Amendment-style free speech a condition for private universities to get federal grant funding.

As for a slippery slope, this tactic was used by the Obama administration to force their no-due-process approach to sexual assault (and "sexual assault" -- the latter being instances of what third-wave feminists call "sexual assult" which doesn't fit the legal definition) on universities public and private.  The precedent having been established, I'm much happier with it being used to do something that actually benefits higher education, rather than for leftist social engineering.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Second, what is slippery about reminding colleges and universities that they, too, are subject to the First Amendment?  What better way to get their attention than through the purse?

Only state universities are subject to the First Amendment (by virtue of the 14th and prevailing 14th amendment jursiprudence).  See my post to this thread just above this one about what this is really doing.

So does this mean we do nothing?  We take no stand?  We abandon young conservatives to all the wolves?

That was sarcasm.  I get that you don't get it.  And that's ok.

240b observed (accurately):
"California, for example, no longer recognizes Federal Law or American Law to be binding on them."

There was a time previously in our history when a group of states did exactly what California is doing now.

What steps were necessary to "bring them back into the fold"?
(of course, those "steps" were taken between 1861 up to around 1876 or so)

What are the odds that if we DO NOT "take those steps" again... that California (and other states like it) will ever return to the fold...?

LOL! This is total complete nonsense. Writing a 'law' or an 'order' is meaningless unless there is some governing body to enforce it.

Yep. Meaningless drivel. The only ones who love it are the 'gotcha' folks that are more concerned with rubbin the liberals noses in it that actually doing something real.

Who says anybody 'wants' them back in the fold. Let'um go. Good riddance. I'm in favor of separating the 'International Territory of California' (as they like to call themselves) from America proper. Just wish they would formally declare themselves an independent State, and get it over with.

In fact, Texas should do the exact same thing. They already have a Republic of Texas national flag. I honestly believe that if there was a secession vote in Texas, it would pass by a huge majority. Let's do it. No time like the present.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

@Absalom

Don't make light of it, please.

With the threat of loss of federal funds/grants you'd think they would recognize/enforce the right to free speech..ANYWHERE on campus.

The Red Hat is misunderstood, because of the corrupt media.

MAGA can mean many different things to people.

Did you know that 72% of the 'well-paying' jobs created by the Trump administration were filled by people on the sidelines??

So often Briefers question whether the millennial generation will be the generation to bring an end to the USA we've known .... whether socialism will be the future they choose.  And this is a valid question.

But that room on Saturday was filled to the rafters with millennials --- the conservative kind.  They were there to hear the President and cheered when he restated America will never be a socialist country.  And they heard him tell them he noticed what was happening to them on college campuses, that he has their backs and they matter.  They stood and cheered this, too.

We should be applauding this, not ridiculing it.  The POTUS put an injection of steel into the spines of the kids who will be doing the heavy political fighting and who will, hopefully, prevail.

Yeah, this is the issue.   :facepalm2:

I agree.  Homeowners pay for 'FREE" public school's, from our property taxes.  Not all people pay for schooling.

@corbe The first amendment and tenue were designed to facilitate spirited discussion, give and take, the free flow of ideas, to encourage learning without fear of reprisal. Sadly creeping liberalism in our colleges and universities has done much to stymie that. Conservatives now are in fear of not being granted tenure due solely to their views. Look at the case of Scott Adams. It is sad that it has come to this, but something had to be done.

This protects all student's first amendment rights, not just Conservatives.

It also applies to all colleges and universities that receive federal funds. People believe that it is only big State schools that receive them, but from what I have seen, you can count on one hand the number of schools that don't receive federal funds in some fashion. Even the small Baptist University down the road from me receives federal funds.

Some may not like everything they see come out of this- it doesn't solely apply to Conservatives. I suspect that you'll start to see groups you disagree with, use this order to have a louder voice at places like the aforementioned Baptist University.

This may be an interesting test to see if some believe in freedom for all or just those they agree with.

Ahh.  So absolutely everyone in the ancient world was erudite and well-educated, until we moderns wrecked everything by creating schools.

So we should do nothing about conservatives on college campuses being beat up, literally,  because the small Baptist University down the road from you may not like the opposing views they hear?  Is this your thesis @ABX ?

I agree with you @verga , except for one thing. It’s not liberalism creeping in, it’s Leftism that has overcome liberalism in our universities. In the past Liberals have stood with conservatives on the core American values contained in the constitution, such as protecting free speech. Unfortunately, liberals have become cowards in standing up to the hate America Leftists on our college campuses.

Liberals have much common ground with conservatives, but not with the International Left who wish nothing less than America be brought to it’s knees.

Nope, I didn't say any of that. I support it. I don't want any group- Conservative, Liberal, Christian, LGBT, whatever, attacked for their beliefs. But I believe some will be unhappy with what they see out of this. Many can't see past their own team and don't like freedom for all. They may not be happy when, for example, a LGBT group demands time at a Baptist University campus.

This may provide some challenge to universities though to accommodate every group that wants free speech time. They may need to set up an auditorium dedicated to this to just rotate people in  and out. With this EO, no group can no be denied time, and there are many, many groups who will take advantage of this.
