Trump to sign executive order requiring colleges, universities to support free speech on campus

by Melissa Quinn

March 02, 2019 02:07 PM

President Trump intends to sign an executive order that would put at risk federal research funding to colleges and universities that fail to protect free speech on campus, he announced Saturday.

“Today I am proud to announce that I will be very soon signing an executive order requiring colleges and universities to support free speech if they want federal research dollars,” the president said during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Oxon Hill, Md.

“If they want our dollars, and we give it to them by the billions, they’ve got to allow people like Hayden and many other great young people and old people, to speak, free speech,” said Trump. “If they don’t, it will be very costly. That will be signed very soon.”

Slippery Slope @Right_in_Virginia with the 'kids' in charge now, I'd rather leave well enough alone.
The Constitution and the current SC's interpretation should cover us on this.

What do you mean by "slippery slope"?

I understand that you don't have any problem with POTUS signing an EO directing what US Universities and Colleges can say or not say, @Right_in_Virginia
I'd rather leave that up to Constitutionalist and not Politicians throwin red meat to their base.

First, in this instance your understanding is limited, at best.

Second, what is slippery about reminding colleges and universities that they, too, are subject to the First Amendment?  What better way to get their attention than through the purse?

Any self-professed "constitutionalist"  would be expected to be at least uncomfortable with the slippery slope that shuts down freedom of speech .... even physically if the mood strikes.   The constitutionalist could even be expected to write an opinion on his or her blog about this.

But, as usual, it is up to someone else to take action.

Any self-professed constitutionalist would not want federal money going to education in the first place.

Almost half of the CPAC attendees were under the age of 25 .....

Trump announces executive order to cut off federal research funds for campuses that don’t protect free speech
American Thinker, Mar 3, 2019, Thomas Lifson

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd with many college-age conservatives in the audience at CPAC yesterday, President Trump announced that he will sign an executive order denying federal research funding to campuses that do not protect free speech. The promise came after he called to the stage Hayden Williams who was punched in the face on February 19 at the University of California, Berkeley, while manning a recruitment table for Turning Point USA.

[...]

Quote
“We reject oppressive speech codes, censorship, political correctness and every other attempt by the hard left to stop people from challenging ridiculous and dangerous ideas. These ideas are dangerous,” Trump said. “Instead we believe in free speech, including online and including on campus.

“Today I’m proud to announce that I will be very soon signing an executive order requiring colleges and universities to support free speech if they want federal research grants….”

“If they want our dollars, and we give it to them by the billions, they’ve got to allow people like Hayden and many other great young people and old people to speak. Free speech. If they don’t, it will be very costly,” he warned.

The devil will be in the details of the executive order, of course. What will the criteria be for judging the required “support for free speech,” without which federal funds are imperiled? One guess would be that charging sponsors of conservative speakers excessive security fees that are not applied to other speakers will be forbidden. The concept of a “hostile environment,” which is beloved by attorneys suing on behalf of racial, sexual, and other minorities, is probably a bigger worry for campus administrators, ...

Nothing scares university administrators more than the potential loss of federal funding. President Trump knows exactly what he is doing in targeting it. The education industry is a solid base for Democrats, and they have to defend it or risk losing entgusiasm and donations. Trump also knows that violent campus leftists attacking nonviolent conservatives appeal only to a small segment of the ultra-left, but do arouse significant revulsion among a majority of voters. His promise of an executive order will enrage his foes on campus, inviting them to criticize it. No doubt, he welcomes such criticism, as a way of keeping the issue front and center during the campaign. It is guaranteed to bait progressives into untenable arguments before the people vote on 2020.

(Again--- 50% of the CPAC attendees were under 25---listen to the applause after the President announces the EO.  The conservative college student is forgotten no longer.)

I this is inspired by that big guy punching out the little guy at Berkeley.  Berkeley is famous for punishing conservatives for speech and looking the other way when Antifa criminals beat up on conservatives.

Is it the right approach?  I dunno.  This will probably be decided by the 9th Circus.
I will NOT comply.

Not a bad thing to do.  Would be better if Congress mandated the tie, but provided there is a sufficient statutory basis for Trump’s EO, I don’t find it objectionable.

Yes.    Still bristle at the thought of that 81 year old man being beaten bloody by the 19 yr old punk.

No line of thinking should be unworthy of discussion. "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain an idea without accepting it." There's nothing intellectual about controlling dialogue in a place meant for learning.

LOL! This is total complete nonsense. Writing a 'law' or an 'order' is meaningless unless there is some governing body to enforce it.

California, for example, no longer recognizes Federal Law or American Law to be binding on them. They are certainly not going to follow some executive directive coming from Trump. They do not even recognize Trump as having any authority over them in any capacity. California does not even recognize Trump as a legitimate President.

Oh well. Better to sign than not, I guess? No expectations that it will change anything in the least. The American Left does not consider themselves to be bound by American Laws in general. And with so many Police Chiefs, Mayors, Governors, and Judges who are sympathetic to their cause, so far they are absolutely right.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
