Venezuela Troops Defect Amid Showdown at Border
José de Córdoba, Daniela Blandon

CUCUTA, Colombia—Four Venezuelan National Guard troops defected from President Nicolas Maduro’s regime Saturday as his political adversaries, with help from the U.S. and Colombia, attempt to deliver tons of humanitarian aid through a heavily armed Venezuelan government blockade.

Video from the Simon Bolivar bridge showed a Venezuelan National Guard armored vehicle on the Colombian side of the span that separates the two countries. Venezuelan guardsmen, armed with rifles and handguns they held over their heads, then got out and were received by Colombian migration authorities.

“Three members just escaped the Nicolas Maduro dictatorship,” a spokesman for Colombia’s migration agency said. A fourth guardsman, a sergeant, defected to the Colombian side from another border bridge. The opposition’s hope is to spur widespread defections, or that guardsmen simply disobey orders, in a rebuke to Mr. Maduro and his allies.
