Meet the AR-15 Pistol (Yes, This Is Real)

A really bad idea?
by WarIsBoring

For years the AR-15 pistol had a rough time in the handgun and personal defense weapon markets. Reviews tended to be critical or even dismissive. Some even openly mocked the weapon for its supposed impracticality. The public wasn’t very interested in it other than as a novelty gun.

There was good reason for that.

The pistol version of the popular semi-automatic rifle didn’t offer many advantages over its longer-barrel counterpart, and in fact suffered several disadvantages.

Nothing new. A co-worker has an Enforcer Pistol.

And my son has the Zastava AK Pistol

But I think the Rolling Block Pistol beat them all

Rifles have been converted into pistols for a long, long time.

This sort of stuff is made for the "absolutely have to have something other people don't have" crowd, and can afford to spend the money. If they had more money, they would buy a big sailboat to leave tied up at a dock somewhere so they could pretend to be sailors.

I know people who have yachts and actually pay crews to move them from the NY to the Fla area and back, depending on the seasons. When they want to play sailor, they from the northeast to Florida to "man and command" their yachts for short day sails,or sometimes to just have parties on.

I used to know several people who had jobs keeping these "harbor going yachts" maintained and manned so they were ready to entertain any time the owners showed up,and who sailed them back and forth during the seasons.

What are more functional are the suppressed SBRs, but they are not pistols.

I got the impression from the article a lot of these are chambered for .223 rounds.  I'd think a pistol like that would kick like a mule.

Kick is relative.

The legacy of the AR pistol is not without its flaws. Such a short barrel length means that there is also a very short gas system. Check this out for a further explanation of AR-15 gas systems. The shorter gas systems cause the firearm to be over-gassed. This means the gasses cycle faster than in a normal rifle, which causes more recoil and louder operation.

Just so you know.

Can I lawfully make a rifle into a pistol without registering that firearm?

No. A firearm that was originally a rifle would be classified as a “weapon made from a rifle” if ; it has either a barrel less than 16 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches. If an individual wishes to make an NFA firearm, s/he must first submit ATF Form 1, Application to Make and Register a Firearm, pay a $200.00 making tax, and receive approval of the application from ATF before converting the firearm.

@thackney

YIKES! A SMELLY pistol! Talk about recoil! I have a couple of those things in their original rifle format, and shooting the standard British .303 round in them is almost brutal. I can't even imagine what it would be like to shoot that light pistol  version.

Talk about something in DESPERATE need of a really good flash suppressor!
