San Francisco (CNN Business)Payless is the latest retail chain to close up shop in the United States.

The discount shoe store will close all 2,100 of its locations in the United States and Puerto Rico in the coming months, a spokesperson told CNN Business on Friday. Liquidation sales will begin on Sunday and stores will begin closing in March, though most will say open until May.

Payless also plans to shut down its online store. The company could file for bankruptcy for a second time by the end of the month, according to reports.

Payless was one of the few places that sold an affordable American made brand too- American Eagle Shoes.

This will probably kill their business too.

Unfortunately, these companies run their course, conceivably, this could someday happen to target and walmart someday.

Maybe they were overpaying their employees.

American Eagle has their own stores.

I suspect I know,  and if I'm correct I'm disappointed that you approach such matters in a knee-jerk fashion.    The causes are undoubtedly more complex than your desire to blame one man.

Not the same company.

Okay thanks.  I guess I'm not the only one to make that mistake.

Me too.  Not enough fat women waddled into their stores these days.

I stopped in a Pay Less looking for shoe laces and they had none.  First time I stopped in there and it was my last.  There wasn't a single customer there.  I can see why they failed.

I liked Payless for a specific purpose -- cheap sandals that I could wear for one season and then not feel bad about tossing them out and buying another pair in the current style next year.

Then again, I haven't been there in at least a couple of years so there's that.

Our downtown mall just lost Herbergers (their anchor store that they just built double the size for)... and now Payless, which is likely their oldest continuous tenant... I don't think they will recover. Their parking lot is hardly ever a quarter full, and most of that is for the hotel out front.
