U.S. Navy Admiral defends safety record by asking Senate committee to consider all the ships that didn't crash on his watch

Sure two navy vessels crashed under Adm. Phil Davidson’s command, but a lot of ships stayed afloat, too.

Sen. Angus King of Maine was not amused when the head of the U.S. Pacific Command argued the amount of ships that did not collide on his watch should be considered in the Senate Armed Service’s Committee’s condemnation of the two that did, killing 17 sailors.

“These two collisions were a tragedy, there is no doubt about it,” Davidson said in reference to a pair of 2017 accidents involving the destroyers Fitzgerald and John S. McCain. “But the fact of the matter is 280-odd other ships weren’t having collisions.”

A baffled King interrupted the Admiral as he tried to argue the Navy’s level of readiness was up to par.
