Ivankacare? Trump faces conservative opposition to family leave program pushed by his daughter

President Trump’s call during his State of the Union address for nationwide family leave led to applause from lawmakers and even a holler from one Republican, but conservative groups are sitting on their hands, fearing the president is about to create a new entitlement program that could quickly expand.

“The biggest concern is the potential explosion of the program over time, and then having a federal program be the one source that everyone has to go to would not serve workers well,” Heritage Foundation research fellow Rachel Greszler told the Washington Examiner. “They would be far better off having a more tailored policy through their employer.”

When Trump addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday for his State of the Union address, he touted the paid leave proposal outlined in his 2019 budget blueprint.

“I am also proud to be the first president to include a plan for nationwide paid family leave so that every parent has the chance to bond with their newborn child,” Trump last week.

The last thing this country needs is another unsustainable entitlement program.
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Healthcare is going to sink the Republicans eventually. A public option for all citizens is inevitable.

Um.....

This article is about family leave

We have this in Virginia. It's a nightmare. It can become an extended vacation which is a great way to find out if you really need that employee. You have a long period of time to take it so you can take Thursday and Fridays off to play golf while the kid is at day care.
Most men are only taking a small amount of it.

It seems the last several presidents want monuments to themselves regardless of consequences or costs as long as the costs can be passed on to future generations

No to this. If an individual business wants to do this, that’s their choice. And if states want to force businesses to do this, well then those businesses have the option to go to more business friendly state

We have it too.  Starting in January a portion of everyone's paycheck goes to pay for it.  It seems it is for all workers even illegal immigrants.

And guess what the new call is for?  Giving salaries to people who don't work.  Its been on the news.  They were talking about Finland and their "program".

AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

I just looked it up. The Oregon Family Leave Act is an unpaid program.

So much for 'we will never be a socialist country'... just repackaged as 'populism'. This, the farm bill, central planning through tariffs... and so on...

We are becoming the Bud Lite of socialist countries.

They always do. She’s been trying to get this in since summer 2017.

Responding to criticism of the proposal by the Wall Street Journal's editorial board, Trump penned an op-ed for the paper that argues that the program is not an entitlement but "an investment in America's working families."
