Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) regularly left employees in tears and at one point hit an aide with a binder after throwing it in anger, according to former staffers who spoke to BuzzFeed News.

The Minnesota senator's former staffers suggest she ran an office "controlled by fear, anger, and shame," BuzzFeed reports. Based on interviews and emails reviewed by BuzzFeed, Klobuchar "demeaned and berated her staff almost daily, subjecting them to bouts of explosive rage and regular humiliation within the office."

Several staffers said employees were frequently left crying due to Klobuchar's anger, which involved yelling, throwing papers, and, in one case, accidentally hitting an employee with a binder.

"I cried. I cried, like, all the time," one former staffer said.

Klobuchar's emails to staffers reveal the nature of her complaints with staff.

In the emails seen by BuzzFeed, often sent between one and four in the morning, Klobuchar regularly berated employees, often in all capital letters, over minor mistakes, misunderstandings, and misplaced commas. Klobuchar, in the emails, which were mostly sent over the past few years, referred to her staff’s work as "the worst in … years," and "the worst in my life."

When staffers made mistakes, the emails show, she reamed them out — and sometimes, emails show, threatened to fire them — over threads that included many of their colleagues.

It's interesting that BuzzFeed reported this, and now the HuffPost is piling on. There must be some official decree from the DNC that it's okay.

Harry Reid Rebuked Amy Klobuchar For Mistreatment Of Staff
A leaked campaign document shows how staff tried to manage her anger.
By Molly Redden and Amanda Terkel

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s mistreatment of her office staff began more than a decade ago and eventually caused such concerns that in 2015, then-Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) spoke to her privately and told her to change her behavior, multiple sources have confirmed to HuffPost.

Klobuchar, a Democrat who plans to announce whether she’s running for president at a rally in Minneapolis on Sunday, has faced trouble hiring campaign aides because of her history of mistreating staff.

A spokesman for Reid said the retired senator prefers not to discuss private conversations he had with other senators. In this case, Reid also does not remember whether or not he had this discussion with Klobuchar, the spokesman said.

“Sen. Klobuchar is one of the most brilliant, hardest-working members of the Senate, and I was glad to serve alongside her,” said Reid. “She’s tireless when it comes to fighting for the people of Minnesota and the country, and that’s why she’s such a popular Senator back home and among her colleagues.”

But Reid’s 2015 admonishment of Klobuchar appears to have been a rare point of intervention in a long history of complaints about Klobuchar’s behavior, which date back to at least her time as the Hennepin County attorney in Minneapolis. That was the job Klobuchar had when she first ran for Senate in 2006. ...

Primary season. There've been whispers that Klobuchar is considering a Presidential run. She's not really high-profile enough to stand a chance, but someone sees her as a threat.

Former Klobuchar staffers complain of mistreatment, temper: report
By Lisa Hagen and Rachel Frazin - 02/08/19 05:08 PM EST

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is facing scrutiny over her treatment of congressional staff and her workplace demeanor, just days ahead of her decision about whether she will run for president in 2020.

A number of former staffers who worked for Klobuchar spoke anonymously to BuzzFeed News, accusing the senator of often berating staff over small mistakes and creating a hostile work environment.

BuzzFeed interviewed eight former aides and reviewed dozens of emails. ...

One staffer was hit with a binder, though Klobuchar did not mean to hit the person, somebody who saw the incident told the publication.

“I cried. I cried, like, all the time,” one former staffer told BuzzFeed.

Klobuchar will announce her decision about whether she will run for the Democratic presidential nomination on Sunday in Minneapolis.

She’s been considering a presidential run for months, but has signaled a likely bid amid news that she’ll be headlining a local Democratic banquet in Iowa on Feb. 21. ...
