Senate panel approves Barr nomination
By Jordain Carney - 02/07/19 12:57 PM EST

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved William Barr’s attorney general nomination on Thursday, voting along party lines to send Barr’s nomination to the full Senate.

The 12-10 vote sets up a floor fight over Barr's confirmation for later this month. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority and Democrats cannot block the nomination on their own, so there is little doubt right now about Barr's confirmation.

Barr, who previously served as attorney general during the George H.W. Bush administration, was expected to easily clear the Judiciary Committee, where Republicans have a majority.

If confirmed, Barr would be the first Senate-confirmed attorney general since Jeff Sessions was ousted in November. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has come under criticism for not recusing himself from the Mueller probe.

Senate Judiciary Committee Meeting on Judicial Nominees Thursday Morning

https://www.thepostemail.com/2019/02/07/senate-judiciary-committee-meeting-on-judicial-nominees-thursday-morning/

The Senate Judiciary Committee is currently meeting to discuss voting on a long list of President Trump’s judicial nominees for circuit courts and U.S. district courts as well as U.S. attorney general nominee William P. Barr.

A third category of nominee is for director of the U.S. Marshalls Service.

Democrats, including ranking member Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), are objecting to the apparent lack of the “blue-slip” custom wherein senators from the state in which a nominee sits “gives an opinion on the nominee,” according to Wikipedia.

The committee is currently chaired by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) criticized “Republicans” of rubber-stamping Trump’s judicial nominees thus far and objected to the “qualifications” of the nominees.

Following Durbin, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) objected to questioning of judicial nominees about their “religious beliefs,” likely referring to Sen. Cory Booker’s questioning earlier in the week of Neomi Rao, who Trump nominated to replace Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) followed and disagreed with Lee.  Whitehouse said that he expects a “constitutional question” to arise regarding Trump’s possible plan to declare a “national emergency” on the U.S.-Mexico border in order to release funds to build a barrier, which Congress thus far has not funded.

Whitehouse then asked Graham to set standards on limits of “executive power.”

Just so you know.  You "love" a guy who was knee deep in the Ruby Ridge fiasco...supports red flag laws and supported a more radical version
of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban that didn't make it through to final passage.

Oh and he thinks Mueller is an honorable guy.

Yeah...there's LOTS to love about him.

About Bob Barr:

Quote
On the assault weapon front, the proposal before us is the DeConcini amendment. And I think … I would support both the Brady Bill waiting period and the DeConcini [semi-auto ban] amendment, provided that they were parts of a broader and more comprehensive crime bill that included … very tough provisions on the use of firearms in crimes and illegal purchase and trading in firearms…

So Barr endorsed both the Brady Check portion of the Brady Bill and the semi-auto ban, although he did express a preference for magazine bans: “I would prefer a limitation on the clip [sic] size.”

Barr also voted for an appropriations bill which contained two pieces of pernicious gun control:

Quote
* The Lautenberg gun ban which disarms gun owners for small (misdemeanor) offenses in the home — “offenses” as slight as spanking a child or grabbing a spouse; and
    * The Kohl gun ban which creates a virtual one-half mile wide “gun free” circle around every American school (or a 1,000 foot zone going in any one direction from any school).

In 1995, The Washington Post reported that “top officials of the Bush Justice Department had at least 20 contacts concerning Ruby Ridge in the 24 hours before [Weaver’s wife] was shot” — and that two calls involved Barr.

Barr also fibbed when he claimed no direct involvement in Ruby Ridge — even though he had sat in on at least two phone calls.

But that’s not all: When the FBI sniper who murdered Vicki Weaver was faced with criminal charges, Barr tried to get immunity for the killer.

He tried to get the judge to dismiss the charges on the general theory that prosecuting FBI snipers “undermine[d]” the attorney General.

Barr spent two weeks organizing former Attorneys General on behalf of the FBI killer. He “assisted in framing arguments” before the district court and on appeals.

In fact, a majority of Barr’s pro bono activities have consisted of trying to cover up for the massacre at Rudy Ridge and exonerating the government killers.

“I have known Bob Mueller for 30 years,” Barr said. “We worked closely together throughout my previous tenure at the Department of Justice under President Bush. We’ve been friends since. And I have the utmost respect for Bob and his distinguished record of public service. And when he was named special counsel, I said his selection was ‘good news’ and that, knowing him, I had confidence he would handle the matter properly. And I still have that confidence today.”

All that matters is that Trump nominated the guy, because as we all know, "Trump hires only the best!"  :rolling:
