I'm surprised it took that long before they wised up to the fact Socialism is unprofitable?

According to Eater, after nine years of being in business, Panera Bread's socialist pay-what-you-want restaurant, Panera Cares, will officially be closing shop on February 15 due to the business model's unsustainability.

While Panera Cares billed itself as a "non-profit" restaurant designed to feed low-income people, the business model was anything but. Rather than create a charitable organization that distributes food to needy families or a discount outlet or even a $1 menu (like every other fast-food restaurant), Panera tried to create a socialist system in which meals were offered at a suggested donation price. That means some people would pay more while others would pay less based on what they felt like or could afford. By not simply offering food at a low price (hat-tip, Dollar Tree), Panera completely removed any incentive for patrons to meet even the lowest standards of consumer/retailer exchange. The result: some people paid their fair share while others enjoyed a "free lunch."

This isn't 'socialist' in any way. This was a failed PR stunt that is based totally on volunteerism.

Socialism is the government control of the production and/or distribution of goods and services.

I wish these political blogs would just slapping the term socialism on anything they don't like. It waters down it's danger and, frankly, makes readers dumber.

Good article, glad it was posted. Panera's not bad but if you want food that will actually fill you up, one might look elsewhere.

That black bean soup they have that is marketed as being healthy isn't much different than if I dumped a can of black beans into a bowl or in this case, a bread bowl.

I agree that this project is not 'socialist' in any way. It seems to be just a normal soup kitchen. Most soup kitchens will accept donations if you offer them. But yes, if you run a soup kitchen you will inevitably run into some weird stuff, and you will need security and bouncers. Drug overdoses, fights, theft, etc. I think Panera didn't know what they were involved in. They were not prepared for what the cat drug in.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists.

That is the real lesson here. The liberals who run Panera believe that if you allow people to pay what they think they owe, everybody will pay their fair share.
This experiment might work in a homogenous country like Sweden (before the Islamic immigrants arrived), but it won't work in this country where we have a sizable percentage of people who think nothing of taking more than their fair share.

It can be labeled as good intentions that ran into economics and human nature

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Use to eat lunch there a lot, unril they took the fantastic steak chili off the menu. A bowl of that chili and a cinnamon roll and I was in heaven.

Maybe Panera should have tried the "honor system" for payment.

And Panera predictably will lose its paying customers.

Bye-bye Panera.

@TomSea

I’ve been to Panera once, with my mother-in-law, who loves it, and once was enough.  My sandwich was four inches of bread with a couple of tissue-thin meat slices.

I hear the coffee is great, though.

Some of Panera's sandwiches are pretty good, but the prices are outrageous.

To me they are the Starbucks of bread.   They sell overpriced crap to posers who think trendy is the cats meow.

Just another example of a situation where Conservatism, although may lose some battles in the short term, ultimately wins the war
