Democrats Need To Find a Centrist Or They’re Doomed
By CONRAD BLACK, Special to the Sun | February 5, 2019


Inveterate and predictable Trump-disparager E. J. Dionne declares the state of the Union to be “petrified” (on the weekend), and cites as illustrative of the complete intellectual and temperamental deficiency of the president, by the standards of his great office, that he has twice, some months apart, tweeted with satisfaction that the Dow Jones Industrial Average had passed upwards through 25,000 (nearly a 40% rise since his election).

In other days and on other subjects, Mr. Dionne has built a serious reputation, and as a Quebecer, I am always grateful to encounter a prominent American who speaks French. I cite him only as illustrative of the predicament of the Trump-disparagers. Of course, they are endlessly repetitive and take outrageous liberties claiming to mind-read the president. But Mr. Trump’s enemies have two real problems. Irritatingly, he is generally successful, but a much more daunting problem is the Democrats.

Mr. Trump has not flamed out, and despite his infelicities and whoppers and some other innocent but sometimes irksome peculiarities, all predictions of his immediate, overwhelming, awe-inspiring self-immolation on a scale to make the worst horrors of the Old Testament seem like gentle stories to read to sleepy children, he has done quite well. Russian collusion and all the other roadmaps to impeachment have just devoured the Democrats and their docile press in a maze of defamatory nonsense.

I have seen several alarming trends in polls (take them for what they worth) showing the stupid American electorate is getting enamored with idea of Socialism.  Watch one of these stupid bitches...  (i.e AOC, Fauxahauntus, etc) take us over the edge.

A "centrist"?   What the hell is that?   

In the Democrats' case... it would translate into someone that... instead of dropping their mask and showing their true radical commie colors (like the Democrats have been doing en masse since Trump's election)....

would be capable of lying smoothly enough to convince American voters that he/she/it is not a rabid leftist, intent on either taking over America or destroying it.

Nah.  I posit that.... when it comes to the concept of a "centrist" that would or could represent the current Democratic Party (sister org to CPUSA)...

Someone would have to come along who would be able to temper the leftist swing of the party and yet not alienate that side.  To be like ... oh, socialism is a great idea, but maybe we need to go slow on totally embracing it.

That person would have to be inspiring but not crazy. Let's face it, even Pelosi is a little scared of the far leftist women and yet she is even more scared of saying anything against them.

When 'heroes' such as Michael Moore declare there is NO MORE moderates wanted in the Democrat Party, they've passed any tipping point.

Predicting right now that President Trump will win in 2020 mirroring President Reagan's 1984 landslide.

And the economic engine is just getting warmed up.   President Reagan had a tough first-two years.

They'll find that centrist I think in a guy like Schultz who will play spoiler in '20, which will sink whatever bat crazy fruitnut candidate they decide to run.

Yeah I saw them and was equally alarmed.......until I read the poll questions and the follow ups. These polls were MSM generated to give cover for the Communism going on in the House right now. If it was anywhere near as popular as they claim it is Pelosi et al would be flooding the House with bills to do it.

Yes, but.... you're still basking in the afterglow of last nite's spectacular SOTU.   A few tweets later.... (one step forward, two steps back) and once the warm fuzzy fades.... the reality may set in.   Unless Trump follows through on building that wall, I don't think he has a DemocRat's chance in Heaven of winning in 2020.  Just sayin....

Honestly, I doubt seriously that anyone will come along like that at this point.   The Dems have gone too far left, too fast, for anyone to believe some late-comer "centrist/moderate". 

That said... they are trying to push Beto (gag me) as their new rising Bobby Kennedy-like star.  Problem is... he is just AS radical as the rest of them.  Plus, he has jerky/twitchy mannerisms that make viewers nervous.  Now granted, those mannerisms can be corrected with enough training.... but right now, he is looking like their main guy, with Harris as their main gal. 

And... unless Trump fails on the wall or screws up in some other way, I agree with DCP and think he'll have 2020 locked up (trying to be optimistic).

Well... I have seen such a thing as a pretenda-moderate Republican.  I believe the GOP still has several of those critters.... generally called Republicans In Name Only.... since they usually vote with the Dems when the vote really matters.  But other than Joe Lieberman, I really haven't noticed any "moderate" Democrats.... and Joe is no longer Dem.  I expect that any other Dems that are even thinking about moderate policies are probably already making plans to leave the party.  The trend is going far, far left, after all.

That's what I find so amusing and yet baffling.   That the left, instead of pretending to go center, are letting it all hang out (it's just easier than lying) re: their true nature and agenda.

The last Old School (Socially Liberal fiscal conservative) Dem that comes to mind is Zell Miller. To me he was the last of a dying breed.  He was so detetched from the current Democrat Party that his last political speech was at the Republican Convention in IIRC 2012.

Pelosi and her ilk have run them all out of the party.

Yeah, thanks.... that's another one ....I couldn't remember his name.  Anyone remotely "sane" has been run right out of the rat party.  It's a sign of the (impending) times, I guess.

I was living in GA when Zell was still in office.  The guy was a class act. And that is what the Democrat party is sorely lacking these days, class.

Not just lack of class.  Look at how Pelosi sat there (again) and made weird faces with her mouth.   A total lack of poise and an apparent lack of self-awareness re: just how ridiculous she came off as.

Even though I'm a strong supporter of Mr. Trump, the days of "landslides" in presidential elections are over.

Such landslides were possible when states like New York, Illinois and California could still "be swung to our side".
That is no longer a realistic nor possible outcome.

The blue states will continue to "get bluer".
Some of the red states will "get redder".
But there are growing problems in the fringe, "purple states".
Witness Colorado, Virginia, Florida, even Georgia -- and in time, Texas.

Nope.
It's not getting easier for a Republican to win.
It's getting harder.

I hope Mr. Trump can pull the rabbit out-of-the-hat again in 2020.

But I don't expect many more Republican presidential victories after that.
