Ralph Northam mulls leaving Democratic Party to hold onto governor's seat
by Katelyn Caralle
 | February 06, 2019 07:27 AM

Embattled Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is toying with the idea of leaving the Democratic Party and holding onto his position by becoming an Independent.

Switching parties could be a way for Northam to hang on, after a picture of his medical school yearbook page was shown to include a photo of someone dressed in blackface, and another person dressed in a Ku Klux Klan robe. The picture prompted several prominent Democrats to say he needs to step down, but the Washington Post reported that Northam has at least thought about a party switch as a way of dodging those complaints.

The Post said he has been isolated from his political allies and state and national party since the picture emerged.

Northam has provided conflicting accounts of the story behind the picture. He first apologized for the image and later claimed that he is neither of the people in the photo.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who would take Northam’s position should he step down, is also facing a scandal of his own after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at the Democratic National Convention in 2004.

Fairfax, also a Democrat, denied the allegations.

How does switching parties save him from anything? The people who voted for him will still hate him.

It's not clear that the people who voted for him hate him.  The usual race-hustlers are saying he should resign.

His polls dropped through the floor. The people that voted for him are not that hip to the Coonman anymore.

What party does Northam want to join?  The Satanic/Socialist Party perhaps?

They don’t.  There have been plenty of black Dems on our local news, gushing that he’s a wonderful man and should be given another chance.

Instead of changing party, just change names to Gov. Al Jolson.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

If you have any black friends or neighbors I would check and make sure they are really black. Seems to be a lot of minstreling going on in that state.

What I don't understand is why putting on a black face is so bad. I know all the sjw's say it is but
why? Plus he did that a long long time ago. I just don't get why this is such a big deal. Curious is
it also bad to put on a white face?

Now having a conversation about murdering a new born child, well that is unforgivable. So off with
his head.

Some people just cannot seem to grasp that it is not your look, name or affiliation is why people do not like you.

It is really just simple:  It is you, and that is all.

At this point, I believe Northam will hold on, but that Fairfax will soon be gone...

@Frank Cannon

I saw something worse than minstreling once.  Some guy in a doctor’s office got into an argument with a black woman and yelled at her “why don’t you go back to Africa.”  That was the only racial incident I’ve ever witnessed.

The guy had a Northern accent.

Only real racism I ever witnessed was outside a Canadian strip club in Niagara where 6 Canucks were beating the shit out of a French Canadian. I'm sure the bizarre racial slurs they were hurling were hurtful if you were a Frog, but they sounded amusing to me at the time. Damn Canadians can't even do racism right.

True, and if anything they love the HELL out of him for giving them an excuse to put a Tan Klan member in the Governor's seat without having to worry about  buying the votes. Truth to tell, they don't give a rabid rats ass about blackface "dress up" at some mindless college party decades ago,but they DO care about grabbing power and direct access to the public treasury.
