Pope Praises UAE, Known For Torture And Forced Disappearances, For Striving For Freedom And Diversity

Joshua Gill | Religion Reporter

Pope Francis hailed the United Arab Emirates, a majority-Muslim nation with a record of human rights violations, as a “model of coexistence” and freedom.

Francis made the comments in a video message to the people of the UAE ahead of his visit to the country, which will take place between Feb. 3 and 5.

The UAE is known for restricting free speech and assembly, sentencing criminals to flogging and stoning per Sharia law, and for the torture and forced disappearances of dissidents, activists and journalists, as well as negligence in addressing instances of sexual abuse against domestic workers. The pontiff praised the country for striving to be a place where people can “find a secure place to work and live freely in respect for diversity.”

It would be helpful if journo Gill knew his ass from his elbow regarding the UAE
which are a collection of Emirates, formerly known as the Trucial States, then
ruled by the British Crown and sited on the eastern border of the Saudi Peninsula.
The Emirates are Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaiman, Sharjah and Umm al Quwan;
each w/an Emir (Ruler). As such they are hardly a unified nation/state.
Their collective population is some 10 million of which 85% are non-Arab expatriates
who work throughout the Middle East Region.
Compared to the rest of the Persian Gulf, the UAE is a bastion of freedom, openness
and tolerance.

Indeed he may be, yet the more important question is whether or not he's a Roman Catholic???

  • All deserve a trial if accused
UAE? Do we have bases over there and are they helping us fight the war on terror? It's better than Afghanistan, where because of some Koran burning preacher thousands of miles away in the USA, riots in Afghanistan and people killed, maybe even an American but I remember someone killed and even beheaded. You've got to be careful, ill-conceived ignorant article.

The article  is idiotic, we've got a base there, why doesn't the idiot author whine about this? Hypocrite.

Maybe he doesn't want help in the war on terror or be like the idiots  :3: who want us to abandon Christians in the Mid-East after the US put them in danger to begin with. Calling places s-holes, well, we have some resp too.

Israel has a diplomatic office in UAE.

We sell them weapons, a lot of them. UK and Canada too.  Is the Pope doing that?

BULLSHIITE! The only ones responsible for putting Christians in the Mid-East in danger are MUSLIMS! IT's a FREAKING Religious war and it will never end for muslims until either they kill every infidel or they are all killed.

You are free to rant/rave till your lungs collapse but what you assert is incorrect.
Despite the media louts and morons, the Middle East is hardly monolithic.
The UAE, Bahrain and Oman are multi-cultural and open entities where,
for example, women drive, manage businesses, intermarry and vote!
Even Iraq under Saddam Hussein was relatively tolerant when compared to Iran.
The catalyst for most of the Middle East turmoil are the tribal 'Palestinians".
Palestine, initially Greek, was occupied primarily by the Biblical Jews.
It became and remained a Roman Province of the Byzantine/Eastern Empire until
Constantinople fell to the Ottomans around 1450.
Those labeling themselves Palestinians have no valid claim to this land. None.
Following the Great War, the Heshemites of Jordan offered those calling
themselves Palestinians, a home.
They responded by assassinating Emir Abdullah in 1951 and have been rootless since.
Many are unaware that large numbers of Arabs world-wide are religious agnostics
who only adhere to Islam passively. Two decades in that region was a revelation.
