All in all, the vast majority of groundhogs (including the notoriously shadow-happy Punxsutawney Phil) have not seen their shadow this morning. Ostensibly, this is supposed to be a harbinger of early spring, but if the rodents' track record is any indication, it's more likely that we have more winter coming.

* Punxsutawney Phil: no shadow
* Dunkirk Dave (western NY): no shadow
* Three downstate NY groundhogs (Staten Island Chuck, Malverne Mel, Holtsville Hal): no shadow
* Shubenacadie Sam (Nova Scotia): shadow seen
* Fred the Marmot of Val-d'Espoir, Quebec: shadow seen
* Buckeye Chuck (Ohio): No shadow
* Woody (Howell, Michigan): No shadow
* Wiarton Willie (Ontario): No shadow

Sanguine:
I didn't realize there was more than one winter forecasting groundhog.

Most are silly knockoffs, but in central Pennsylvania, there are several... and although Punxsutawney's believed to be the first, there are a few that go back almost as far. The Germans brought the tradition over from their native country when they came here.

More are coming in.

Most of the ones in the midwest (Jimmy in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; Woodstock Willie in Illinois) are not seeing their shadows. The South seems to be a clean sweep: all the ones I've found saw their shadows.

Santa's helpers.
