Is anything private in the digital age?
Even your contact list and your musical choices reveal personal information. Natalie Parletta reports.

Most of us think we have control over our online privacy with the security settings of social platforms – and some less trusting people opt out of social media altogether.

But two new studies, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, show you can’t even have a contacts list or listen to music without revealing personal information to Big Brother.

In the first study, led by James Bagrow from the University of Vermont in Burlington, US, researchers used information theory to amalgamate data from over 30 million Twitter posts by nearly 14,000 users.

The answer is easily no. At that, I learned a while back that the more you try to be private on the internet, often that leads to less privacy. Some 'private' browsers, search engines, and plug ins, end up getting more eyes on them from those that watch these things as those who do, believe that those who try to do this are more likely to be doing something they are trying to hide.

If you are online, you are not private, period. You can create all the sock puppets and use all the private browsers and VPNs but at the end of the day, they are all breadcrumbs that lead to you.

The best thing you can do if you don't want to or can't disconnect, is to manipulate your image.
