On September 6, 1966, Dimitri Tsafendas entered South Africa’s packed parliament, where he worked as a courier, and stabbed to death Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd.

Verwoerd was not simply South Africa’s top official. He was the architect and most ardent advocate of the system of racial segregation – apartheid – enacted by Afrikaner nationalists.
