Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, said Friday she will run for president in 2020.

"I have decided to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week," she said in an interview for CNN's "The Van Jones Show."

Considered a liberal rising star in her party, Gabbard served as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, but resigned in February 2016 amid rising tensions with then-DNC chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. Upon leaving, Gabbard endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for the party's presidential nomination over Hillary Clinton.

Rania Batrice, who served as deputy campaign manager for Sanders in 2016, said she will be Gabbard's campaign manager for the 2020 season.

what is not to like about this.

Let's get this idiot out on the Democrat debate stage to showcase incompetence, racism and disconnection to any reality.

What is the left’s problem with Tulsi Gabbard?
The Hawaiian congresswoman has few friends on her side of the aisle
Michael Tracey
November 24, 2018

Few contemporary American political figures generate such unique disdain as Tulsi Gabbard, the Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii. The disdain is not unique for its tenacity – plenty of figures are on the receiving end of bitter criticism – but for its political composition. Gabbard straddles an ideological fissure that spans the Democratic and Republican party coalitions in ways that are difficult to pin down. Despite being an avowed progressive on policy issues and a frequent critic of President Trump, her most committed antagonists appear on the left.

The consternation perhaps began in earnest during the 2016 presidential cycle, when she resigned as a Vice Chair from the Democratic National Committee to endorse Bernie Sanders – and in so doing cast stark aspersion on Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy judgment. This created seeds of doubt among liberals that she was a double agent of sorts, operating within the Democratic party for the stealth purpose of undermining its cohesion and causing problems.  ...

Trump supporters sometimes profess that Gabbard is one of the few Democrats they find palatable, probably because she seems to avoid the Culture War brawling that so often comes across as tedious and shrill when filtered through the contemporary left-wing moralizing lingo. All that said, her positions are still almost entirely progressive by any normal measure (with a few possible exceptions that her liberal antagonists frequently highlight). This creates an unusual paradox in her public perception. Seeming palatable to Trump supporters automatically evokes suspicion among liberals as evidence of some lurking moral turpitude.

Her visit to Bashar al-Assad in January 2017, along with former Democratic Congressman and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, was the final straw for enemies whose antipathy toward her had been simmering and craved an attack-line to coalesce around.   ... Read the entire article at Spectator

While everyone is laughing and having a good time about her inexperience, just remember, she met with the transition team in 2016 and was seriously considered for a cabinet position.

Some thoughts via Twitter from Jordan Schachtel of Conservative Review and The Blaze:

Quick nat sec reaction to Tulsi announcement:
1) She seems to be a genuine person & I respect her service.
2) The idea that she's "not taking sides" in overseas conflicts is not true. She is an apologist for Assad, RU, Iran, & has spread RU propaganda about US mil role overseas
7:37 PM - 11 Jan 2019

I have no reason to believe that she is acting as a foreign agent, and there is no proof for such an allegation. She has served her country honorably and remains a patriotic person. So I assume she plays an ignorant, unwitting role in spreading Russian and Iranian propaganda.

This isn't to say that all of her instincts are bad. She is certainly right in her critiques of hyper interventionist policies that led to the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Congress needs more voices for general restraint in foreign policy.

FWIW, Rep. Gabbard isn't only 1 who has been ridiculous on Syria.

These two ideas are equally foolish:
-Hyper interventionist demands to topple Assad on behalf of Sunni jihadis. (Rubio, Graham, McCain, Clinton)
&
-Gabbard "peace for our time" moments w/ Assad, a murderous thug.

On 1st point, consider u can't just topple Assad & wipe hands clean. What's to say another Assad-like tyrant won't replace him? Ask why Israel, Syria's enemy, has not killed him. If we do, we are responsible for stability ops. That means 10s of 1000s of US ground troops. Hell no.

People, this is foreign policy analysis. Of course there are many reasons why conservatives would not support Tulsi Gabbard on domestic and econ policy, but that's not what I'm discussing here.

The left calls in their mouthpiece CNN to begin the assault:

Tulsi Gabbard once touted working for anti-gay group that backed conversion therapy
By Andrew Kaczynski, CNN
Updated 7:12 PM ET, Sun January 13, 2019

(CNN)Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in the early 2000s touted working for her father's anti-gay organization, which mobilized to pass a measure against same-sex marriage in Hawaii and promoted controversial conversion therapy.

Gabbard, a Democrat from Hawaii, said Friday in an interview with CNN's Van Jones that she will seek her party's nomination for president in 2020. Her past views and activism in opposition to LGBT rights in the late 90s and early 2000s, which put her out of step with most of the Democratic Party at the time, have come under more intense scrutiny since her announcement.

Although Gabbard's positions on LGBT rights have shifted dramatically in more recent years (she signed a 2013 amicus brief supporting Edith Windsor's challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act), the extent of Gabbard's past anti-gay activism has already drawn criticism from prominent Democrats and will likely be a major issue for her as she seeks the party's nomination.

A spokesperson for Gabbard did not respond to a request for comment.  ... Full story

You do realize that Gabbard is about the most rightward member of the entire Democrat Congressional caucus (both House and Senate).  If she weren't from Hawaii, she'd probably be a Republican -- Iraq War vet, regularly ruffles feathers on the left with criticisms of some of their more absurd enthusiasms.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

I also saw she had a relationship with Hindu right wing nationalists and one article says she wants to distance herself from that.  Anyway, as for me, I welcome hearing her actually. That doesn't mean I agree with what she says. Politics is in her family, her father was a big wheel Democrat over there and probably before the Dems became so excessive.

Which means she's got absolutely no shot at the nomination,  not in today's Bolshevik Party (formerly known as the Democratic Party).

Dem Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Condemns ‘Religious Bigotry’ In Judicial Nominee Process; Dem Sen. Hirono Hits Back
By Frank Camp
January 13, 2019

On Tuesday, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) released an op-ed titled, "Elected leaders who weaponize religion are playing a dangerous game."

The piece, published by The Hill, took aim at politicians who use religion as a cudgel against their political opponents, specially as it pertains to judicial nominees.  ...

While the representative singled out Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) regarding her comment to 7th Circuit Judge (then nominee) Amy Coney Barrett, Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono (D) appears to have taken the op-ed personally, as she was one of the individuals who questioned nominee Brian Buescher regarding his faith and membership with the Knights of Columbus (KoC).

Through spokesman Will Dempster, Hirono’s office issued the following statement:
Quote
Senator Hirono asks all judicial nominees – particularly those who have expressed very strong personal ideological views in conflict with Supreme Court precedent – if they can be fair. She asked Mr. Buescher, who has a clear record of anti-choice activism, whether he could separate his personal beliefs from decisions he would make if confirmed for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench. Over the past two years, the Senator has been attacked by right wing ideologues for her examination of Donald Trump’s ideologically-driven nominees to the courts. It is unfortunate that Congresswoman Gabbard based her misguided opinion on the far-right wing manipulation of these straightforward questions.
