‘Voice of Hispanic America’ Salinas: Many Latinos ‘Buying’ Trump’s Arguments Against Illegal Immigration

Former longtime Univision anchor María Elena Salinas revealed on Tuesday evening that many Latinos are buying the arguments President Donald Trump is making about illegal immigration.

Salinas, whom the New York Times once described as the “voice of Hispanic America,” told CNN host Don Lemon after Trump’s Tuesday evening Oval Office address that she is saddened that Latinos “are buying some of these arguments against undocumented immigrants” that Trump has been making.

“And it’s very sad to see that our own people, who are immigrants themselves, are attacking these immigrants that are trying to come in, knowing themselves how difficult the situation is in a lot of these Latin American countries,” she continued. “And, you know, they’re buying it, and some people, just like some other Trump supporters, are saying, well, you know, so what if he tells lies, as long as we have lower unemployment among the Latino community.”

Don't discount the importance of having a job, or the opportunity to go find a new job, or to get a raise for work well done.

That Hispanics are "buying" Trump's policies should be no surprise.   Prosperity for ordinary folks is a function of two things:  Getting government out of the way so employers can prosper and take their workers along for the ride.   And limiting illegal participation in the labor pool so that economic growth translates into higher wages.    Those have been Trump's policies,  reflecting his populist instincts and the coalition he devised to support them.

I just had a long conversation with a Hispanic woman Wednesday that let me know she is in full support of Trump's wall and of illegal immigration control.  It was heartening how similar our political ideology is... considering our different background and heritage.  I know other Hispanics that feel the same way about the wall, Trump, "Obamacare" and other issues that we have in common.  So the Democrats may just be shooting themselves in the foot on this one (open borders).
