Trump before his Oval Office address: This speech won't 'change a damn thing'
by Katelyn Caralle
 | January 09, 2019 07:52 AM

President Trump said hours before his Oval Office address Tuesday night that he didn't think it would change anyone's mind.

“It’s not going to change a damn thing, but I’m still doing it,” Trump said Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

Trump used his first Oval Office address to the nation to argue that the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border is a humanitarian crisis that demands a border wall. But he was instantly rebutted by congressional Democratic leaders, and the two sides are no closer to a solution Wednesday morning.

Trump is headed to Capitol Hill Wednesday to have lunch with Senate Republicans, and will later meet with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders to continue negotiations for a funding bill that he hopes can include money to build a border wall.

The president says he will not sign a bill that does not include funding for the border wall, and has said law enforcement officers believe $5.7 billion is necessary for the physical barrier.

The speech was surely lacking...I don't know who wrote it for you but they sure failed.

You had the bully pulpit last night and you should have taken advantage of it with visuals..Show Nancy and Chuckie saying in years past that we need a wall..show the innocent victims killed by these thugs..no one thought to do any of this......sheeeesh!....8mins just wasn't enough.

The speech lacked energy, was delivered half-heartedly, and only resonated with his base. Sounds like Stephen Miller wrote it.

Odd.  I could have sworn that I just heard the guys on Fox say that he "spoke from the heart" (not from the written speech).

More soft-serve BS?   In a time that, if it really is a "crisis", Trump should be using a machine gun against the open-borders rabid left .... instead, he seems to be using a sling-shot with spitwads.   Question we should be asking is....

why.

I watched the speech and thought the president hit exactly the right notes but what the heck do I know about anything?
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

I didn't watch it.  Intentionally, so.   But most of the gist I'm getting is the ssdd, expected rhetoric.  What I glean from those comments and from clips I've seen of the speech since... is that he wasn't quite pointed enough.

Let's face it.  We are undergoing an orchestrated (by the left) attack on our borders.... for political purposes only.   I think some straight talk to that effect is in order by Trump.  But... like you said...

what do I know...lol.

Your instincts are dead on Bigun. A presidential address is not the time to go all Ross Perot with charts and data...it’s a time to appear calm, rational, and concerned for the nation. Trump hit all those notes about right. It might be less satisfying than playing recordings of Dems advocating for a wall just a few years back...but venue and tone matter more right now in terms of winning the public debate. Likewise, is an overtly emotional address might have come off as either artifice or as adamant partisanship....instead...the President was “Predidential”. Which is precisely what was needed.

Yet privately, Mr. Trump dismissed his own new strategy as pointless. In an off-the-record lunch with television anchors hours before the address, he made clear in blunt terms that he was not inclined to give the speech or go to Texas, but was talked into it by advisers, according to two people briefed on the discussion who asked not to be identified sharing details.

“It’s not going to change a damn thing, but I’m still doing it,” Mr. Trump said of the border visit, according to one of the people, who was in the room. The trip was merely a photo opportunity, he said. “But,” he added, gesturing at his communications aides Bill Shine, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway, “these people behind you say it’s worth it.”

Typically, when he does something he’s advised to do, but doesn’t really believe, he’ll take a couple days, then contradict what he previously said. It’s similar to when he said Blasey-Ford was ‘very credible’ and ‘a very fine woman,’ after her testimony, then ridiculed her recollection at a rally, days later.

I firmly disagree...His speech was not aimed at us. It was directed at the people who watch the MSM every night at 6pm during dinner who have been inundated with NBC, ABC, CBS's view and have never seen the victims and have no idea what is actually happening other than the fact it is a *made up crisis*......and Trump is a racist.

The best part of his speech was not in the speech but after it.

Honestly, if Trump were to have managed to show or include those past comments and quotes by Obama, Hillary and Schumer that were 'pro' border control and fences... I think it would have gone a long way to ""edicate"" some of those folks out there that only get their fake news from lamestream media.  It would have illustrated the hypocrisy of the left.  If only....

I thought it was directed at NT's like me. He toned down his rhetoric while making reasonable claims that are easily supported. Most of us in flyover country are supportive of barriers on the border.

He mentioned rat leaders were for the barrier before he became president. If he'da showed charts or aired a soundbite it would've ceased being an oval office address and would've become something else.

Yes, but you already know the facts and agree with Trump on this issue.  He should have also been speaking to the other side.  Some of them just might be persuadable, had he tried to do so.

Good point.   But I can't help the 'dreamin'.

I so want Trump to stick it to the rats.... at least verbally....

Tone was the key element last night. For the millions that have only seen the combative Trump, this was a departure from what they have been slammed with for the past 3 years. It also forced Schumer and Pelosi into a box, with their lack of emotion matched by too much makeup on both of them. They looked like the Clanton brothers in their coffins after the OK Corral.

I guess I'm part of his base, so I thought the speech was fine. In fact he focused more on the political motives of the democrats than I imagined he would. He also did not differentiate "good" from "bad" illegal immigration - he lumped them all together in a negative sense. THAT was a clear departure from previous presidential references to the problem, including his own.

That's it.  That's it exactly!   They look 'too made up'.  Unnatural (not like they really look).  Like they've been "embalmed".    :rolling:

Ah, well and good.   Now I must find the speech and watch it in its entirety.   I want to see that!   happy77

Oh come on, the media not only knows what's been said behind closed doors, they actually can read peoples' minds and discern their true motivations. It's really quite a gift that God has bestowed only upon leftists.

@skeeter @Mesaclone @the_doc

I think you three got it right. An eight minute oval office address is not the time for overblown theatrics. The steady and calm demeanor was “presidential.”

See, folks? I’m not a Hitler warming up the welcome ovens for our south-of-the-border visitors to occupy.
