Senate Democrats hold talkathon to protest partial shutdown
By Jordain Carney - 01/08/19 08:20 PM EST

Democrats are holding a talk-a-thon from the Senate floor on Tuesday night as they try to ratchet up pressure on Republicans to take up bills to end the partial government shutdown.

Democrats have been talking on the Senate floor for nearly two hours. The talkathon comes ahead of President Trump's prime-time address, where he's expected to address the U.S.-Mexico border wall fight at the center of the shutdown.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who helped organize the floor speeches, called the partial shutdown "unnecessary" and "embarrassing."

"It's unnecessary because there are bills on the floor right now that would solve this, bills that are bipartisan, bills that have been supported … by you and other Republican colleagues in the chamber a matter of a few weeks ago," Kaine said.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) argued the House bills were being taken as "hostages" by Senate Republicans and Trump.
