Julian Castro cites 90 percent tax on rich in defending Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on tax hikes

Likely 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro agrees with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that tax rates on some of the wealthiest Americans should skyrocket.

"Oh, I can support folks at the top paying their fair share," Castro told ABC News' "This Week" on Sunday when asked directly whether he could endorse the high-profile New York Democrat's idea.

The Obama-era Housing and Urban Development secretary, who is expected to officially announce he's running for the White House this week, made the comments after Ocasio-Cortez caught flak for suggesting people earning more than $10 million could be taxed between "60 or 70 percent."

In offering support to Ocasio-Cortez, Castro provided historical context given the current highest marginal income tax bracket is 37 percent for those receiving more than $500,000 a year.

That was also the time when the European, Japanese and Chinese economies had been obliterated by World War II and, in the last case, a Communist overthrow. We were about the only country left in the world that still had undisturbed manufacturing power.

I wonder if they're also proposing to use the same income brackets time adjusted for inflation, and add back in all of the deductions available back in the day, too.

Of course not, they live the history of now as Andrew Wilkow says.

Of course not. All they heard in college was 'they had 90% tax rates back then' and they're going with it.

And not a single one of the Democrat millionaires in Congress ever will pay a 90% tax. That's only for the "tippy top" (as AOC calls them) who live in the real world.
I have decided to officially and formally not apologize. I'm not sorry at all, even slightly.

Indeed, I especially want to convey my absence of remorse to anyone who was offended by what I said. If you are the sort of person who gets twisted into knots when someone articulates a point of view that differs from your own, then you are exactly the sort of person who should never receive an apology for a differing point of view — if I were offering one, which, again, I'm not.

Hell make it 100%. If 90% is good 100% got to be better. And why just income over 10 mil? Make it 100% on all income with no loop holes like 401Ks or IRAs.

I recently read about there being a 102% tax in Sweden (you know, the country AOC wants to turn the US into). I'm sure the Marxists in Congress would approve.

Astrid Lindgren spoke, people listened
Astrid Lindgren was so much more than a best-selling author of children’s books like Pippi Longstocking. She was also an important opinion former who helped unseat a Swedish government, influenced changes in the law and even inspired anarchists.

Astrid Lindgren is the eighteenth most translated author in the world, and one of the most well-known Swedish authors. She became an author relatively late in life, and an influential voice on everyday issues even later. Because of her popularity, people listened to what Lindgren had to say.

At the age of 68 she submitted an opinion piece to the Swedish daily Expressen on the subject of a loophole in the Swedish tax system, which meant that she, as a self-employed writer, had to pay 102 per cent tax on her income. Lindgren wrote the piece in the style of a fairytale, and it had an immediate impact. ‘Pomperipossa in Monismania’, published in 1976, became front-page news and led not only to a change in the tax law, but eventually to the fall of the social democratic government that had been in power for 44 years. ...

That's the goal. Take all our income and decide how big an allowance we get. After all, we all belong to the government as some democrat trial balloon noted.
