The Chinese scientist who sparked global outrage after it was claimed he created the world’s first gene-edited babies issued a half-hearted apology over how the news was broken to the world, but remained defiantly proud of his scientific achievement in an interview today.
Speaking at an international conference in Hong Kong, geneticist He Jiankui defended his highly controversial experiment in which he used the CRISPR-Cas9 technique to block the genetic markers that make humans susceptible to HIV. The video in which he announced the birth of reportedly healthy genetically engineered twin girls Lulu and Nana was released prematurely, he told his still-bewildered colleagues.
