Democratic pollster Nancy Zdunkewicz said Friday that there are a group of moderate Republicans who say they would be willing to consider voting for a candidate like outgoing Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) in a match-up against President Trump.

"We've been polling a three-way race with Donald Trump and Kasich, and whoever the generic Democratic candidate for president would be, and there's a large part of the Republican Party, about 25 percent that are moderates, and they are very willing to consider voting for John Kasich," Zdunkewicz, managing director of Democracy Corps, told Hill.TV's Jamal Simmons on "What America's Thinking."

"In fact, about 20 percent of them are already defecting," she added.

Kasich, who ran against Trump in the Republican primary in 2016, has been floated as a potential challenger to the president for 2018.

The Ohio governor's spokesman, John Weaver, said Friday that Trump should be careful what he wishes for, in response to comments from the president, saying he hoped Kasich would challenge him.

However, a Hill.TV American Barometer poll released last month found that 67 percent of self-identified Republican respondents said they would vote for Trump when asked to choose between the president and Kasich.

Kasich is no Perot.  He could run as a third party candidate, and Trump would still win.  Kasich would actually take more votes away from the Dem candidate, for he is a liberal hack.

This is about as newsworthy as what the drugged out homeless guy said to me last week at a cross walk.

Moderate Republicans; = RINO's. If Kasich were to run under the DEM umbrella, he'd do just fine.

Kasich barely managed to beat the pathetic Ted Strickland in the wave election of 2010, and would likely have lost in 2014 if his no-name opponent hadn't imploded. The idea that he could somehow be a credible candidate on a national level is just as ludicrous now as it was in 2016...

Kasich, the mailman's boy, is now recognized as the putz he is.  No one supports anything from him except his disappearance from the public eye.  I fully support he do that!

Don't underestimate the appeal,  with each of the GOP and the Dems lurching toward their respective hard right/hard right "bases",  of a centrist candidate who reflects where most Americans are - conservative on economics and national defense,  liberal on social policy.

To succeed, such a third party candidate needs both major parties to make the same mistake of nominating a polarizing figure - for the GOP, Trump, for the Dems, a progressive socialist.   And both parties need to continue their current course of partisan hate and recrimination for its own sake.

Kasich will not be successful running in the GOP primaries, other than to position himself for a third party run.   Make no mistake - that is his strategy, to set himself up as the candidate of common sense and moderation in contrast to the Washington circle jerk.

Yep.  Sounds like something a Dem pollster would say.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

Kasich's endless ambition, reminds me of John Anderson, who finished his career by endorsing Nader in 2000.

I read elsewhere that some "Republicans" would gladly lose in 2020, to be rid of Trump.

I think this site is home to several such.
