Sound from Mars captured by NASA's InSight Lander is out of this world
NY Daily News, Dec 7, 2018, Danielle Cinone

Sound from Mars has been captured for the first time — and it’s out of this world.

NASA shared eerie audio footage of Martian winds from its InSight Mars lander Friday.

InSight — which traveled more than 300 million miles and landed on Mars Nov. 26 after a 7-month trip — detected wind vibrations on Dec. 1.

"Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat," Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement.

"But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is measuring motion on Mars, and naturally that includes motion caused by sound waves."

The sounds were picked up by an air pressure sensor and seismometer.
