The state's two lone legal pot shops sold roughly $2.2 million in weed products in the first five days of business, the Cannabis Control Commission reported today.The average amount spent per customer was also tracked daily and went from a high of $42.60 (on day 2) to a low of $37.17 (on day 5), the commission added. ...The Northampton and Leicester legal weed joints — the first two east of the Mississippi — had brisk business from Nov. 20, opening day, through Nov. 25.Sales were: $440,011 day 1 $441,540 day 2 $479,748 day 3 $468,325 day 4 $387,996 day 5 That accounts for a total of 56,380 "total units purchased" -- basically pre-rolled joints to edibles -- the commission reported. Each customer bagged an average of 3.4 products.But the crowds, especially in Leicester, have been "hell," to quote one resident at last night's emergency meeting in that town."We're in hell," Marc Castonguay, 57, of Leicester said, according to his local newspaper, MassLive. Editorial: As pot hits Boston, serious laws neededBoston Herald Sunday, November 25, 2018 Boston is on the way to having pot shops up and running but there is little cause to celebrate. The very neighborhood where a recreational pot purveyor is seeking to open up a shop is already a hotbed of drug addiction.The city reached a host community agreement with Ascend Mass LLC, which is seeking to open up shop on Friend Street in the West End. ...The idea of a pot shop in the West End seems almost cruel. Multitudes of addicts already congregate in and around North Station on one end and a substance abuse center on Canal Street on the other end. ...Colorado legalized marijuana in 2014 and a federal study showed a sharp spike in traffic deaths since then. Additionally, marijuana use by young people in the state increased 20 percent since legalization.The people have voted for legalized recreational marijuana. It will undoubtedly improve the lives of some but it may destroy the lives of others. We must demand that those in the marijuana industry are held to the letter of the law. We must take a comprehensive approach to the players in the game and treat marijuana much like we did “big tobacco.†A determination to protect our young people from the scourge of drugs must be a guiding principle.
