Houston reports record snow; Pearland takes on thundersleet
« on: November 14, 2018, 12:10:41 am »
Houston Chronicle by  Samantha Ketterer and Michela Garcia 11/13/2018

Houston saw a trace of snow on Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported, marking the earliest recorded snow for the Bayou City and breaking a nearly 40-year record.

A trace of snow/sleet was recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport, where the city's official weather is recorded. Tuesday's report broke a record previously set on Nov. 23, 1979, the agency said in a tweet.

Some parts of the area, including Pearland, also experienced thundersleet, where in a thunderstorm, sleet falls instead of rain. A couple of lightning strikes were reported, said Merrifield, who added the phenomenon is pretty rare here.

Those who deal with truly cold weather will scoff, but it's in the 30s here, overcast, damp, and windy, and to me it feels bitterly cold.  It actually reminds me of winters I spent living in Northern Indiana, although the temperature was much colder there.

As a refugee from the cold corrupt north, Chicago, this weather, the gray skies, the cutting wind, and freezing temperatures remind me of what I'd rather forget. We didn't get any snow in Medina.
Principles matter. Words matter.

No snow in east central Texas either, but it's really raw out there.  Windy, damp and cold.

Well, first thing is to turn the air conditioner off.

Looks like they ought to have a state of emergency down there. I know flurries confuse and scare Southerners....

Yeah, well that was in NORTH Carolina.

If that happened in NC just imagine the full out Zombie Apocalypse that will happen further south.

LOL! That's right.

I hope y'all have enough food in the house... Likely there will be a run on the stores and the shelves will be empty of everything except those awful mini hostess donuts...

Hey, what I don't understand is that as you head in to Georgia from Florida, and maybe North Florida does this too, there are signs at bridges warning you that the bridge may freeze before road does.  What is the warning for?  Are you supposed to get out and push your car across?  Pull over and throw on chains?  Or is this like the warning on toasters that you shouldn't use them while you're in the bath tub?

Yes. And don't get out of your car and lick the metal expansion joints.

Metal joints?  Never heard of that.  Something new out of California.  I bet @Frank Cannon will know.

Yes, I was raised to always be prepared.  It might be beans and cornbread for a couple of weeks, but there's much worse options.

Yeah. We used to call them a "Bat and Dugout" back in the day....

....Millennials probably call them "Hard Smoky Stick and Wood Thingy" now. They are a dim bunch.

No.  That doesn't "feel" bitterly cold.  That IS bitterly cold.

Agreed.   When it gets down to about 30 above freezing, it's time for a coat, or at least a couple of layers including some long sleeves.

Be strong Houston!

Yep... I would be wondering if maybe I should put on flannel... a touch nippley for just a t-shirt.
