What's at stake in the midterms? Both sides warn the future of our democracy is at risk

Calamitous language isn't exactly new to American politics, and the assertion that just about every election is crucial has become a political trope. But the 2018 midterms have been the most combustible in more than a generation. The arguments are fiercer and the lines more sharply drawn than even those marked by clashes over war (Vietnam in 1966, Iraq in 2006) and scandal (Watergate in 1974, impeachment in 1998).

"One electorate has its hair on fire and thinks that Donald Trump is a threat to the republic," Lawrence Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, said of Democrats. "For Republicans, there's an ominous warning about chaos, that the resistance movement will be the breakdown of law and order."

Both sides see "cataclysmic scenarios," Jacobs said.

Democrats really rely on demographics, no surprises with the map at the link just showing some distribution of blue collar workers, white suburbia and so on, even counties that were for Obama in 2012 but for Trump in 2016:
Quote
These Counties Could Determine Control of the House

Four types of American counties could play an outsize role in whether Democrats regain power in the lower chamber.
Priscilla Alvarez Frankie Dintino Caitlyn Hampton
Oct 31, 2018

This November, the Republican Party’s control of Congress is on the line. Democrats need to net 23 seats in the House to flip that chamber for the first time in eight years, and two seats in the Senate to wrest control from the GOP. Victory will be harder to reach in the latter body, where 10 of the seats Democrats are defending are in states Donald Trump carried in 2016. But recent shifts among the electorate have given Democrats a greater chance at seizing power in the House.

Four groups of voters could play an outsize role in both the outcome of the election and the potential realignment of the two parties’ coalitions in the years to come. They’re voters who live in counties with distinct demographic and voting profiles: majority-minorities counties, majority-white suburban counties, pro-Trump counties with a manufacturing base, and counties that voted for former President Barack Obama in 2012 and then for Trump in 2016. Some of these areas saw shifts in the last election that helped Trump win the White House. Their votes this year could be particularly instructive for Republicans and Democrats alike who are trying to plan their party’s future.

Using data from three sources—the 2017 American Community Survey (ACS), an annual sampling of the U.S. population; the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employment data for 2017; and the Associated Press’s election results—we’ve tracked how voting preferences for House candidates in those four groups of counties have changed over time, beginning with the 2012 election. (Figures also include uncontested and noncompetitive races.)

For me, demographics is not the last word but it still is something one can and maybe should pay attention to, imho. Sometimes, the data doesn't have much meaning as well.  I mean, until I see different, Utah counties are going to be red generally.

Gov and Senate, but mostly watch the gov race. The democrat is an out and out socalist, it's bad
news if he wins.

That's bullshit. Know what it means? It means the GOP candidate is a moron. DeSoto has run one of the shittiest campaigns I have seen in a while. Unforced errors and bad messaging.

I haven't voted yet -- I'm waiting another hour so I can take two of my millennial sons with me -- but I did drive past the polling location on my way to the store for printer ink to print out sample ballots with the appropriate choices marked for my boys.  It looked like our location was fairly busy for this time of day on a midterm election.

If you are printing out sample ballots and marking them up with the proper choices you most defiantly have Millennial kids.

We should get a heads up as to direction pretty fast, the Donnelly-Braun Senate race in Indiana will have some of the first returns. Not sure where KY-6 is at but if its eastern that will be another one.

Add: looks like it is the eastern half.

I won't be able to sleep until I know.  Just heard that DEM Gillum wants to implement a State Tax!!  OMG!!  How oh how can people be voting for this clown??  He will destroy this state!  He'll be worse that Chiles (in office when we moved here over 27 years ago).  Nelson, I can deal with though I'd love to see Scott take it.  It's the governor's seat I'm extremely worried about.

I'm also worried about TX.

It's going to be a long long night folks.

What do you say to a Christian Conservative neighbor that says she isn't going to vote.... (and didn't even know the name of the Conservative guy running against O'Rourke)?  I mean... what do you say that won't end the friendship?  Nothing.   She lost her only son earlier in the year so ..... I just keep my mouth shut.  But it bugs me.

LOL, I guess that would be an issue.

Mine are good on the major races, but asked for some help on the more minor ones.  I was happy to provide suggestions.   happy77

I voted early.  I am in the NC-13 which Fox shows as hotly contested. Dems have spent a lot of money in negative ads.  In a few months we'll be back in TN so am watching that Senate race with interest.
