Mayor Martin J. Walsh said whoever vandalized the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Dorchester this week is a “disgrace†as state police launched an investigation into the incident.
“The Vietnam Memorial in Dorchester is a beautiful place for people to go,†Walsh said. “There are names of people on that memorial of people who sacrificed their life for this country, and to have somebody go in there and do that, I hope we find them, arrest them and prosecute them and put them in jail. It is completely unnecessary and a disgrace to themselves as a human being for doing that and to our veterans and the families whose names are on there.â€
The state police launched an investigation at the memorial on Morrissey Boulevard after a woman noticed the vandalism Thursday and reported it. The memorial was trashed, with flower beds and bushes torn up, an American flag cut and a Massachusetts flag torn off its flagpole and tossed by the woodline with trash dumped on top, police said. A POW-MIA flag at the memorial is missing and was apparently taken, and bricks were thrown at the memorial, leaving marks on the stone, police said. ...
