It's really something quite bourgeois, come to think of it.

Those in the city, at least those who spend most of their life there, develop this idea that there is more than enough to supply all our needs (the tenet that underpins all socialist thinking), while at the same time being totally detached from the means of producing it. Food and clothing, in particular. They're surrounded by takers of all kinds, and they just assume the makers will always be there--and worse, they think those makers are on Wall Street, and not in the farms and oil fields.

I forgive hippie enclaves like Ithaca that aren't so dense, where they're close enough that they might logically come to that conclusion, but a lot of these big city liberals just don't have a grasp on scale.

I've been to Missoula back in the 80s but never got to see the downtown area, such as it was.  Instead, I went with my husband's relatives teenagers and we hiked a couple of miles up a mountain to a pristine trout lake where the fish bit a bare hook (they were that desperate...lol).  Coming from a mostly big city (first Dallas, then Houston).... I enjoyed it immensely.

See now, if you'd only give in, move on up here and marry me, you'd have all that right in your back yard all the time!

Lol.... marriage is a fine institution.... for the clinically insane (been there, done that, uh uh).

And yeah, I hate snow.  Lived in Norfolk, VA as a kid and got my fill of it.  Now... if you lived on a tropical beach... with lots of champagne and Corona....

might be an offer I wouldn't refuse.  At this stage of my life (I know better now).... I'd rather live in sin than be married!

I went to New York City once in the late 90's.  The only reason I went was because: 1) It was free; 2) My best friend wanted me to accompany her; 3) Curiosity (it's a curse).

So we came, we saw and I will never go back.  As a proud Texan, I won't hesitate to say...

it's not my cup of java.

Just seeing the faces of the folks on the subway (rode that out of curiosity, too) coming home from work kinda depressed the hell out of me.  Nobody was smiling, happy, or the least bit "alive".  They seemed more like miserable drones.  A real downer.

Yeah, we stayed at the Plaza the first night... and I have to tell you... I got some weird vibes there.  I didn't like it. We moved to a cheaper hotel the 2nd night and it was much better.  Have no idea why.

There is a whole category of hats in America which are called specifically Church Hats. It's a pretty big deal in some communities. Hats for women are also a very big deal in Britain. There are 'hat wars' going on over there among the women, to see who can come up with the biggest and most ornate hat. Like birds with the fanciest plumage gain social status, the same with women and their hats.

Interesting side note is, all semitic religions require women to cover their hair as a sign of humility and respect toward God. I think this is the likely origin of the Church Hat. A woman with loose flowing hair used to be considered a loose woman. At one time, a woman showing a man her hair was a prelude to sex, and the phrase, 'let your hair down', meant women going wild.

(pop 217k) on a rare occasion for a car show or some such... But I avoid big cities like the plague they are. Folks stacked up that close together just can't be right in the head.

I don't know what it is with hats and British women.  Some of the things they perch on their heads look like bad dreams.

What you say about loose flowing hair in past times  is true.  IMO it only began to change in the 1960s...do you think so?  If you look at movies and ads previous to that decade, women always wore their hair either very short or put up. 

I have loose curly hair....some fool once told me I couldn't be a Republican with hair like that.

That's only a logical result, considering several factors.  One of which is... there is a lot more crime in big cities, tending to make folks not trust anyone they don't know.  For myself, I tend to be antisocial in the big city... since I know that (stats show) that is where the majority of damned lefties dwell...lolol.  But hey, if I could afford to live in the country....

Well, I do love nature and hate city noise (constant screaming sirens).  I'd have to get used to the quiet though.  I remember trying to sleep in Granbury, Tx years back... visiting from Houston.  Good grief it was unnervingly quiet....lol.

It's not that quiet - I hear crickets, tree frogs, coyotes, the whistle of the train in the distance.  It's lovely.

What I don't hear is cars with obnoxious bass, screams, dogs barking, sirens, etc.

I've watch my town grow from 38K to over 100K in 24 years.
Its time to head out farther.
Maybe Wharton, Austin, Colorado, Lavaca counties?
If I stay in Fort Bend county, it will be closer to the county line, farthest away from Houston, as far is I could get.
I still have to talk the wife into it.

Maybe I'll just go all out and become @corbe's neighbor.
I will probably go to the Wurstfest this weekend anyway.
I am a little leery about going.
The last time I went, my drive shaft came out of my Truck's transmission, going 70 mph on I-10 just outside of Sealy.

   I've been here for 26 years (Nawlins transplant) and this town has gained over +50K residents since then, from 23K to 78K.  Getting a little too big for me.  I too, am looking further west forsaking the Guadalupe/Comal river basin for the Frio River.  Unfortunately I have had to put those plans on hold for awhile.
