Voter Control of Gambling in Florida

This amendment ensures that Florida voters shall have the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling by requiring that in order for casino gambling to be authorized under Florida law, it must be approved by Florida voters pursuant to Article XI, Section 3 of the Florida Constitution.  Affects articles X and XI.  Defines casino gambling and clarifies that this amendment does not conflict with federal law regarding state/tribal compacts.

The amendment's impact on state and local government revenues and costs, if any, cannot be determined at this time because of its unknown effect on gambling operations that have not been approved by voters through a constitutional amendment proposed by a citizens' initiative petition process.

DO NOT VOTE FOR CASINOS IN YOUR STATE!!!!

They pulled this shit in PA a couple years ago claiming property taxes would go down and other things would be funded out the ass. When it was said in done a bunch of Pols are getting rich off kickbacks, taxes went up and now we have gambling addicts all over the place that, as everyone saw coming, need govt' assistance to either kick the habit or to live.

I don't know which way I'd vote on this, were I a Floridian.  I do think it's a little unfair Native Americans have rights the rest of us don't.

There are a dozen or so Indian Casinos around me now, and after I move there will be a couple of dozen Nevada casinos across the river from me.   :shrug:

I'm torn on this one.  If this passed, I would never vote for approval of a casino.  However, the Amendment isn't necessarily about that.  It pushes the responsibility of the legislature off onto the population; it's straight democracy.  However, it keeps the legislature from being bought off to approve a casino.

Same when they brought the lotto to CA. Promised us this would take the heat off the taxpayer, make other bond measures and increased property taxes for schools unneccessary.

Bullsh*t. They take the lotto money and continued to raise taxes in all other areas as if nothing happened.

The State will always consume anything they're given, no matter the amount, and still demand more. All legalized gambling does is feed the beast and make him larger.

I've seen the legislature pull that here.  There is a Reservation out in the sticks, the Tohono O'odham, that wanted to open a casino, but they're way out in the middle of nowhere.  The legislature voted to allow them to annex a square mile in Glendale, near Phoenix.  The residents of Glendale had a royal fit over it, but the Federal Courts sided with the Indians and a casino is going up in the middle of their city.

I was torn until I read your post.  Now I'm a no.  I don't like democracy.  And the argument that it keeps the legislature from being bought off by a special interest could also be applied to approval of just about anything.  We have the power to hold the legislature in check, if we use it.

Besides, my freaking mailbox has been full for three weeks.  Last thing I need is something else to vote on.
