Trump moves Cruz rally to larger venue after 'unprecedented' demand for tickets
Washington Examiner, Oct 18, 2018, Caitlin Yilek

President Trump’s campaign has moved next week’s rally with Sen. Ted Cruz to a bigger venue in Texas after citing an “unprecedented” demand for tickets.

Trump’s 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted the venue change Thursday, saying the response for tickets to Monday’s rally in Houston has been "HUGE and unprecedented."

The campaign rally will now be held at the Toyota Center, which can seat up to 19,000 people for concerts. The previous venue, NRG Arena, holds about 8,000 people.

Trump announced last month he would hold a “major rally” with Cruz at “the biggest stadium in Texas we can find” to help the Texas Republican fend off Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, who is running for Cruz's seat in the Senate.

After booking the NRG Arena, a Trump campaign aide told the Dallas News that they were unable to find a bigger venue in Houston that was available for that night.

"The suggestion that we didn't book the largest venue available is erroneous, as we sought other locations for the day that early voting begins in Texas on Oct. 22, but they were not available in Houston," this aide said. "We will try to accommodate as many people as possible and also provide viewing for the overflow crowds that always accompany our rallies."

On Monday night, the Trump campaign took issue with the suggestion that the 8,000-seat arena didn't live up to the president's promise.

"The suggestion that we didn't book the largest venue available is erroneous, as we sought other locations for the day that early voting begins in Texas on October 22, but they were not available in Houston," a campaign aide who refused to be quoted by name told The Dallas Morning News.

The Trump and Cruz campaigns have not explained the sudden availability of a larger venue.

But Hunter Segesta, the Toyota Center's digital marketing manager, told The News on Thursday afternoon that the Trump team "just called over here a couple hours ago."

"And Monday is open on our calendar," he explained, also confirming that capacity for the event will be 18,000 people.

Asked if anyone affiliated with the campaign had previously contacted the Toyota Center, Segesta said, "No." Asked if slot on Monday has been open on the calendar for awhile now, he said, "Correct."

Trump to campaign for Cruz in Texas, 77K sign up for venue that fits 18K
Fox News, Oct 19, 2018

At least 77,000 people have signed up for President Trump’s Houston rally on Monday to support incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who is locked in the Texas Senate battle with Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston police will be “fully mobilized” for the rally. Attendees must have tickets to enter and will be admitted in the order that they line up, the report said.

"Keep in mind that once the capacity is met, you won't get in whether you have a ticket or not," an officer said.

More than 77,800 people had signed up for the rally by Friday morning, according to The Chronicle. A person familiar with the event told the paper that the Trump campaign was not considering a move to a larger venue.

Houston police heard unconfirmed reports that a separate nearby rally for O’Rourke could also draw thousands, according to the report.

"We will have many many officers out and about," Chied Art Acevedo said. "We will have officers on the high ground, low ground, in the air. We will have officers in plainclothes, we will have undercover officers, we will have react teams."
