Donna Shalala in Florida’s 27th congressional district: The Democrats’ disconnect with Florida’s Cuban American community
September 27, 2018 by Alberto de la Cruz

Democrat Donna Shalala faces off against Cuban American Republican Maria Elvira Salazar for Florida’s majority Hispanic 27th congressional district.

For decades, the Democratic Party has been underestimating as well as taking for granted Florida’s Cuban American community. On the one hand, they believe Cuban Americans have little to no influence in elections even though that belief keeps costing them elections. And on the other hand, they have a habit of lumping Cuban Americans in with other Latinos and taking for granted they will blindly vote as a bloc for Democrats.

This disconnect with Florida’s Cuban Americans — and in essence a disconnect with reality — has led Democrats to choose Donna Shalala as their candidate to run in South Florida’s 27th congressional district. The seat Shalala is competing for is the same seat Cuban American Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has held comfortably for two decades. It is also a district that is over 70% Hispanic with the vast majority of them being of Cuban descent. Yet Democrats think Shalala is a good fit for this seat.

Shalala not only lacks a connection with the district’s majority Hispanic community, she has at best a tenuous connection to South Florida.

Would it really be hard to decide which one, one would vote for?  wink777

Oh well, it's a district and sometimes, districts can be extreme in representation.
