Let’s have a look at the gamut of popular 6.5mm cartridges, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Metric bore diameters have never really been a huge success here in America; perhaps it’s our natural resistance to the metric system, or simple American pride. Nonetheless, the very nature of the 6.5mm (.260 cal.) bullets makes it a wonderful choice.

While the 6.5 Creedmoor is gobbling up the lion’s share of attention within this bore diameter, there are many other, and many older, viable choices. It has been overlooked for far too long here in the U.S., being an excellent choice for the most popular game animals here. Let’s have a look at the gamut of popular 6.5mm cartridges, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Zak Smith Puts Accuracy Int'l 6.5x47 Through Its Paces

Our featured rifle is an AccurateShooter.com project gun designed to test the viability of the 6.5x47 Lapua as a tactical/practical cartridge. Starting with the proven Accuracy International platform, we added a 6.5mm Satern cut-rifled barrel, chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua by GA Precision. Our goal was to do more than a quick accuracy test. This project rifle was to be carried into competition and put through its paces. Zak Smith did just that, steering the 6.5x47 to first and third place finishes in two Practical Rifle matches. The gun has proven to be both 100% competition-worthy, and ultra-accurate. It delivers half-MOA accuracy or better with factory-loaded ammo. With handloads, it groups in the twos and threes. This 6.5x47 combines real-world field performance with tack-driving precision.

Under 6.5 Grendel they list it as a cartridge for the AR10 platform. This is in error. It was designed for the AR15. I have an Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel upper for my AR15.

I'll just stick with my trusty 6.8mm otherwise known as a .270 Winchester.  Never failed me yet.

I started out at 6mm (.243Win). I stayed there for a long time. Then up to 8mm Mauser. Down to 7mm Mauser. Then down to 6.5 x 47 Lapua and 6.5 Grendel. I think I'll stick with 6.5. Though I just built another upper. This one in .358 Yeti. I was given about 20 lbs of once fired brass, mostly .270, and I converted it all to Yeti. This is to be my hog gun.

At one point here recently...6.5 Creedmoor was discussed as a replacement round for the Army's 5.56/.223
