Boston considers giving legal, non-US citizens voting rights

In an effort to make city elections more inclusive, Boston City Council will hold a hearing Tuesday on ways to give voting rights to legal, non-US citizens, the Boston Herald reported.

The controversial measure proposed during a meeting at Boston City Hall on June 19th would allow legal permanent residents, visa holders, and those on Temporary Protected Status and those in the DACA program the chance to vote.

Arguing their case, Boston City Council President Andrea Campbell cited a 2015 city report that states non-US citizens have paid $116 million in state and local taxes and generated over $3.4 billion in spending.
