A Silicon Valley money machine soared with the tech boom, but grew greedy and obsessed with winning until its entire culture came crashing down around top executives who embodied its approach.

This was no startup looking to “disrupt” a staid industry with a mobile app and a distaste for regulations, though. It is the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the Bay Area’s largest nonprofit, a home for money from the big-name tech founders of Facebook Inc. FB, -0.97%  , GoPro Inc. GPRO, +0.78%  and many more.

On Wednesday, SVCF said its chief executive, Emmett Carson, was stepping down, after a law firm hired by its board of directors confirmed that the charitable organization had a toxic work environment where misconduct — from sexual harassment to racist comments and bullying in the workplace — was ignored by executives. Carson’s departure was the culmination of a deconstruction that began with a bombshell report in April from the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
