Beefing up armed security, expanding the program allowing armed teachers and enhancing mental health services are among the options Gov. Greg Abbott offered to schools Wednesday in his effort to make Texas schools safer amid a rash of mass shootings.

Abbott's plan also includes a gun lock giveaway, a social media strategy to encourage people to safeguard firearms, a new school safety app and an expanded program to help identify and remove dangerous students.

The ideas are part of 40-pages of recommendations for school districts and law enforcement agencies to implement, largely before students return for the next school year. The plan also includes legislative ideas for lawmakers to write into law next year.

The governor's proposal includes $120 million in grant money to help schools implement many of the ideas and a matching grant program for more pricey programs....

...Abbott spoke about "school hardening strategies" such as reducing entries and exits at schools — and "active shooter alarm systems" that can be easily distinguished from a fire alarm. That approach, he said, would help students and staff respond appropriately — and avoid sending students into hallways where they might be targeted by an active shooter.

The governor also said state law should be changed to force courts to report a mental health adjudication that someone is "mentally unfit to have a gun" more quickly. The law should tighten that deadline to 48 hours rather than the current 30 days, Abbott said.

Abbott's plan calls for adding more school marshals — teachers who are licensed to carry firearms and go through training — as well as increasing the number of marshals per campus....

What a stark difference to what Obama regime wished - sweep problem kids under the rug.

Problem kids, not guns, cause almost all the tragedies we have witnessed.  Abbott addresses how to handle them, while Obama and his minions just wished them to go away.
No punishment, in my opinion, is too great, for the man who can build his greatness upon his country's ruin~  George Washington

Common sense and critical thinking are still alive here in Texas. Good on the governor. The teachers n my little town have been armed for years.

Also, Governor Abbott is talking about doing this when school starts up again this year, not some future, down the road, after we've debated it to death, date.
