House Speaker Ryan Moves to Stop Republican Revolt on Immigration
May 16, 2018, at 11:07 a.m.

By Richard Cowan and Susan Cornwell

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday faced revolts from the right and center of his Republican Party as lawmakers fought over legislation that would protect young illegal immigrants from deportation.

At a morning press conference after huddling privately with rank-and-file Republicans, Ryan warned a small group of moderates that it would be a "big mistake" if they continued pushing a procedural maneuver to force votes on four separate immigration bills.

Instead, Ryan said he was working with the White House on a singular measure that would win President Donald Trump's support. At a press conference, Ryan did not provide details or a timetable for advancing such legislation.

So far, 18 of the House's 235 Republicans signed a petition aimed at forcing a wide-ranging immigration debate that would allow the bill with the most votes to advance to the Senate.

Why is Ryan standing in the way?  This is the perfect time for the GOP to affirm the unconcealed soul of the modern GOP and Trumpism.  The dark idolatry of the Wall, the sweet redemption of the scapegoat sacrifice, and the unity of hate.  I'm calling ICE.

Think this will be taken out of context?

It's too bad Trump is so ignorant of how the media works.

I'm sure that whatever it is that Mr. Ryan is working on will work out just fine for all of us members of the great unwashed. / sarc

Let legislators legislate.  What a concept!

No one fears the prospect of a bipartisan majority more than the partisan ideologues, who view politics as bloodsport first and bloodsport last.

Only progressives consider 47 democrats and 4 republicans a "bipartisan majority'.

An immigration bill supported by such a coalition would be vetoed by Trump.  But the two more conservative bills being considered ought to have the chance to find bi-partisan majorities.  Each would provide the funding needed for more border security,  so I would think Trump would sign either.

Perhaps Ryan knows that if these clowns pull this off the GOP can definitely kiss their majority goodbye in November.

After all thats what house speakers are supposed to do.

But I doubt it.

Why would the GOP lose its majority by passing a bill that gets the President the funding he needs for border security?    Even many conservatives are sympathetic to the plight of the DACA folks;  so why not normalize them in exchange for the needed funding?

Because loosening the rules for illegal aliens is not what got Trump elected.

A recent poll conducted by UC Berkeley has determined that 59% of Californians want deportations increased.

And increased funding for border security addresses the problem of illegal aliens.  The DACA folks are illegal, but not of their own doing.  Most folks understand the difference and sympathize with their plight.  Conservatives risk blowback by taking a hardline position on folks who are here through no fault of their own, and who in many cases know no home other than the U.S.

Republicans who aren't foaming-at-the-mouth nativists understand this.  There is a likely a substantial majority on the GOP side who are willing to accept the normalization of the DACA folks in exchange for full funding for border security.   It's a sound political deal,  and House rules ought not to stand in the way of such a practical compromise.

This exposes Ryan as an inept leader as an affirmative vote here would be by members not led by him.
