A Mom Thought She Had the Flu, But Ended Up With a Fatal, Rodent-Borne Illness

A New Mexico mom died after her symptoms of a rare disease known as hantavirus were initially mistaken for the flu, the Farmington Daily Times reports. Kiley Lane, 27, who was the mother to a 2-year-old, was tested for a variety of diseases before testing positive for hantavirus, which is spread by rodents.

Lane first received medical care on January 13, and doctors diagnosed her with the flu and released her the same day. But her symptoms got worse, and she was hospitalized for several days. After being released, she ended up having trouble walking on her own. On February 5, Lane tested positive for hantavirus and was airlifted from Farmington, New Mexico to a hospital in Albuquerque. The family told KRQE-TV that they don’t know how she contracted the virus.

I guess it's time again, last big Hantavirus scare was in the four corners area in 1993. Seems like the only safe places are in Alaska and Hawaii.
