Volcano is erupting too.  My brother and SIL are supposed to cruise to the Hawaiian Islands next month.  Will there be any of the islands left?

 :silly:

Although, I did feel one in Houston that happened in Mexico City in the 80's
I turned to a co-worker and said, "If I didn't know any better, I think an earthquake just happened".
He thought I was nuts, until he saw the massive earthquake on the news that evening.

I had forgotten about the volcano.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/hundreds-residents-flee-lives-following-hawaiian-volcano-eruption-131344114.html

Around 1,700 residents have been forced to flee their homes following the eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano.

An emergency evacuation followed yesterday’s eruption on Big Island, which saw molten lava spread through forest land and bubble up on paved streets in Leilani Estates, near the town of Pahoa.

Hawaii’s governor activated the National Guard to help with evacuations and provide security to about 770 buildings left empty while residents sought shelter.

Asta Miklius, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory, told the Associated Press there was no way of knowing exactly how long the eruption would continue.

“One of the parameters is going to be whether the summit magma reservoir starts to drain in response to this event, and that has not happened yet.

“There is quite a bit of magma in the system. It won’t be just an hours-long eruption probably, but how long it will last will depend on whether the summit magma reservoir gets involved. And so we are watching that very, very closely.”

@goodwithagun @GrouchoTex   Thanks, I am fine.  It was on Hawaii or what we call the Big Island.  Typical of Hawaii, they interrupted TV with an alert but never said what the alert was for so I didn't know a thing about it till I got up.

There is a volcando on Maui; I've driven up to it but it's not active (until it is, of course)

The Big Island is our closest neighbor on Maui but Maui felt no effects at all.  And I think the effects on the Big Island were pretty contained.

I just heard a quick blurb on the news - they're doing mandatory evacuations.

Glad you're safe, @Emjay.

Major 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes the Entire State of Hawaii Following the Fourth Eruption of the Big Island's Kilauea Volcano
By weather.com and the Associated Press13 hours ago

A major 6.9 earthquake has struck near the site of multiple volcanic eruptions on the eastern end of Hawaii's Big Island. The earthquake, likely the biggest since 1975, was felt more than 200 miles away from the epicenter in Honolulu.

The 6.9 earthquake was the third large earthquake to rattled the eastern end of the Big Island since Thursday. Two smaller earthquakes, measured at 5.4 and 5.0 magnitude, signaled the beginning of the awakening of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano on Thursday and early Friday.

More than 200 earthquakes have shaken the Big Island since mid-day Thursday. ... More, plus video, at the Weather Channel

Hawaii News Now:

'She's not done': Despite forced evacuations, residents respect Pele's process

Saturday, May 5th 2018, 4:15 am EDT
By Dillon Ancheta, Digital Content Producer

PUNA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -  With upwards of 200 Big Island residents staying overnight at public shelters, many were left wondering when — or if — they'd be let back into their homes in the Leilani Estates subdivision.

On Friday afternoon, Big Island Mayor Harry Kim said the possibility is likely pending safe conditions following the emergence of recent lava fissures that sent sulfur dioxide and hot lava flying feet into the air.

"We are going to allow it," Mayor Kim said. "We talked about what our policies will be. Yes there is a mandatory evacuation meaning people should know there is a high risk of destruction, but we have tried to set a policy that we're going to try help each and every one individual that we can, to allow them to (return), even stay if it's safe enough."  ...

Hawaii volcano eruption live feed: How to WATCH Kilauea stream - smoke BILLOWS from crater
Sunday Express/UK, May 6, 2018

More than 1,800 residents in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens had been ordered to leave their homes since the eruption of Mount Kilauea began on Thursday.

Petra Wiesenbauer, owner of Hale Moana Hawaii Bed and Breakfast, evacuated Friday evening with her two teenage children and pets.

"Now we are just trying to make plans for the future," she said. "There is no telling when or if we'll ever be able to go back in."

After the initial eruption blast, so far ten fissures - or cracks in the ground - have appeared in the East Rift Zone, spurting lava fountains some 100 feet high in dramatic images.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said "eruptive activity is increasing and is expected to continue."

And experts warned the eruption could continue for month- with at least five structures having already been destroyed by the lava ana da number of roads left covered in the molten liqued, which has now began to harden.

They sure do things different in the Islands, we would never repave a road like that in California.
