Need to download a software program to play DVDs,CDs
« on: March 24, 2018, 03:42:28 pm »
My new smoking hot gaming computer didn't come with a CD/DVD player,so naturally it didn't come with the software to allow a plug in CD/DVD to work properly.

I bought a new "External ODD & HDD Drive" to plug into a USB port that came with a "AORUS" graphic driver and utilities disc, and can't even get it to load or work properly.

So I go to the Microsoft Store link on my computer, and there must be dozens of apps I can download for free,or pay a nominal fee to download. The problem is it seems like none of the damn things really work.

I have Windows 10 home, and recently upgraded to Windows Pro. What,if any software programs do you recommend so I can use my CD/DVD player as an actual DVD/CD player?

When  I was in the market for a new smartphone a few months ago, I found a bunch of videos and knowledgeable people, on YouTube.

After Google, YouTube is the 2nd most used "search engine." No guarantee, but worth a try.

Thanks!

Seems to me most of the reviews I see on the microsoft store page are suspect. Pidgin English, either condemning or praising software makes me suspicious that someone connected to the software is posting false positive reviews.  That ain't gonna work on you tube.

I have a Lenovo with Win10, and I use PowerDVD from the apps store.

Your CD should open with the Win10 music app...

But Windows Media Player (WiMP) is still in there, I think... Goto 'default apps' (Settings=>Apps=>Default Apps). Hit the pulldown by 'music player', and see if WiMP is there... if so, select it.

if not, maybe you can install the last version...

If otherwise, VLC player is pretty popular... Media Player Classic too... Media Monkey is a more full featured media platform... or if you have an iphone, iTunes...

all likely available here: https://filehippo.com/software/multimedia/

For purely PC use (not Iphone use)....I have been using VLC player for years... love it.  But for burning CDs... I just use the Windows Media Player.  Works like a charm.

Yeah, CDs work like magic with total plug n play, but I had to find something to play the DVDs in my laptop.

Might be a codec thing too... I always put in KLite codec pak (the 'medium' one, I think)... It comes with Media Player Classic (if you want it), and every codec under the sun.

I use and recommend CDBurnerXP for burning and ripping... Nice. simple. dedicated.

Or for folks that need more tech, ImgBurn is tops. Complicated, but it will do anything.

Its free. I use several of their not so free products as well.

I have given up burning CDs and DVDs and have gone to memory sticks.  I still have albums full of DVD movies, but I have ripped most all of them and have loaded them onto my NAS box.

Well,I don't know if I did or didn't. I ended up downloading AVS Media Player because none of the suggested players were available by those exact names in the MS store, and when I went to the MS home page, every time I tried to download the MS player,I was told it was the Win 7 version despite being called the Win 10 version, and incompatible with my software.

AVS downloaded smoothly, but I need to calm down a lot more before taking on that frustration again. I am hoping it goes well tomorrow,or I might have a new hole in my wall.

Bill Gates should be hanged for releasing an operating program with no media player.

No kidding. I have yet to find a win10 box without WiMP onboard, but I hear they exist... Most machines I have been on were upgraded in the 'free Win10' days. I do hear tell that a factory Win10 install will not have WiMP... Odd to me, as I have rubbed off my own boxen and installed clean, and all mine still have WiMP.

And WiMP is a thing for me... My local streaming (movies and music) is all served over WiMP's streaming service. When it is gone, I am going to need to come up with something else.

But anyway, don't put much stock in MSStore. Apps are mostly crap. And there are plenty of free programs out there that are still full service programs, and have a long history with plenty of satisfied customers...

VLC player... open source and quite versatile for playing most any media. But you will want to find a cd/mp3 player that is lighter (Foobar or such). VLC will play about anything you throw at it, but why run a cpu intensive program just to play an MP3.

I use Imgburn to burn cds/dvds....

As with all free programs, try to get from original source and make sure you read install instructions because some try to get you to leave something checked and you end up installing bloatware (or worse).
Exodus 18:21 Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders over ....

@Sighlass

Not just free programs,either.

The free program I did download (AVS Video) already had the boxes checked for Google Chrome, and google something else, though. I made sure to remove the checks before downloading it.
